{"id":18795,"date":"2010-02-19T14:02:40","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T21:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=18795"},"modified":"2014-02-10T11:33:55","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T18:33:55","slug":"jazz-up-your-weekend-with-a-musical-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/jazz-up-your-weekend-with-a-musical-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Jazz up your weekend with a musical festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Get your feet tapping to the beats of the NAU Jazz Festival Feb. 25 through 27 and relax to the rhythms of more than 50 bands.<\/p>\n<p>The festival features Arizona\u2019s best junior high, high school and community college bands and will celebrate its 48th year at NAU with a guest performance by jazz pianist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jim-mcneely.com\/home.html\">Jim McNeely<\/a>\u00a0with the NAU Jazz Ensemble One at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in Ardrey Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The NAU Jazz Festival 2010 is free and open to the public, but tickets are required for the McNeely Guest Artist Concert. They are $20 in advance or $25 at the door for the public, and $15 in advance or $20 at the door for students. For tickets, call (928) 523-5661.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with Bob Brookmeyer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider, Jim McNeely is on the short list of greatest living composers for jazz ensemble,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Russell Schmidt<\/strong>, acting director of Jazz Studies. \u201cHis music is deep, but not ponderous, because of the life and buoyant wit he imbues in his work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Guest Artist Concert will feature six of McNeely\u2019s original compositions, including\u00a0<em>Extra Credit<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Der Seilt\u00e4nzer<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Tightrope Walker<\/em>) and\u00a0<em>Absolution<\/em>. His latest album is called\u00a0<em>Up from the Skies<\/em>with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra on the Planet Arts label.
