{"id":18445,"date":"2010-01-13T10:08:41","date_gmt":"2010-01-13T17:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=18445"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:56:57","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:56:57","slug":"spike-lee-to-visit-nau-on-holocaust-remembrance-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spike-lee-to-visit-nau-on-holocaust-remembrance-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Spike Lee to visit NAU on Holocaust Remembrance Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spike Lee, one of America&#8217;s premier film directors, producers, writers and actors, is coming to Northern Arizona University to talk about citizenship, government policy and human rights.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000490\/bio\">Lee<\/a>\u00a0will speak during International Holocaust Remembrance Day at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 in Ardrey Auditorium. He also is scheduled to meet with about 40 students during an invitation-only reception.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We chose Spike Lee to address the campus on International Holocaust Remembrance Day to recognize his advocacy for Hurricane Katrina victims, his candid portrayal of the challenges facing some African-Americans and his relentless focus on prejudice and racial stereotypes,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong>Jane Marks<\/strong>, director of the NAU Martin-Springer Institute, which is sponsoring the event.<\/p>\n<p>This year the institute is focusing on refugees and displaced people.<\/p>\n<p>The visit also will include an extensive film series the week of Jan. 22-26, with many of Lee&#8217;s influential films screened before his presentation on Jan. 27.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Spike Lee is a seminal figure in cinema,&#8221; said film expert\u00a0<strong>Paul Helford<\/strong>, principal lecturer in NAU&#8217;s School of Communication. &#8220;He opened the door to black filmmakers like John Singleton, the Hughes Brothers, Keenan Ivory Wayans and others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added that Lee does not stray far from controversy, citing\u00a0<em>Do the Right Thing<\/em>,\u00a0<em>School Daze<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Bamboozled<\/em>, which is &#8220;absolutely outrageous, a cross between\u00a0<em>Network<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Producers<\/em>\u00a0in which the only black executive at a television network comes up with an idea he&#8217;s certain will fail\u2014a television minstrel show series, which, of course, becomes the biggest hit of the season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Helford said Lee got into filmmaking to use his craft to be able to say something about the human condition. &#8220;Since 1997&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Four Little Girls<\/em>, the moving and tragic story of the 1963 bombing of a Birmingham, Alabama, church that killed four young black girls, he has proven himself to be one of our most important documentary filmmakers,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It should have won the documentary Oscar that year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<table width=\"230\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"210\" height=\"156\">\n<table width=\"195\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"191\" height=\"134\">\n<table width=\"237\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"217\">Ticket information<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Tickets for \u201cAn Evening with Spike Lee\u201d are $30 for the public, $15 for NAU faculty and staff, and free for students. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and debate on racial issues in Flagstaff, featuring the NAU debate team and community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Other films will be screened at the NAU Cline Library Assembly Hall, including his 2006 documentary,\u00a0<em>When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts<\/em>, which Helford called &#8220;maybe Lee&#8217;s greatest accomplishment to date.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>When the Levees Broke<\/em>\u00a0focuses on people displaced in the aftermath of Katrina and reminds us that there are many lessons of the Holocaust that still need to be learned,&#8221; Marks said. &#8220;Our hope is that we can use Spike Lee&#8217;s visit and films to provoke candid discussions about racial and class issues in Flagstaff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Helford reminds viewers of another aspect of Lee&#8217;s work. &#8220;Something you are always guaranteed of in a Spike Lee film is a great soundtrack,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And you&#8217;ve got to admire a filmmaker who bookends the four brilliant hours of\u00a0<em>Levees<\/em>\u00a0first with Louis Armstrong performing Louis Alter&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans<\/em>\u00a0and finishing with Fats Domino&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Walking to New Orleans<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Read all of Helford&#8217;s reflection on Spike Lee\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2010\/1_13_10\/spike2.htm\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spike-lee-to-visit-nau-on-holocaust-remembrance-day\/\">Spike Lee, one of America&#8217;s premier film directors, producers, writers and actors, is coming to Northern Arizona University to talk about citizenship, government policy and human rights.
