{"id":16868,"date":"2013-04-19T14:28:20","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T21:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=16868"},"modified":"2013-04-19T15:39:40","modified_gmt":"2013-04-19T22:39:40","slug":"study-reveals-how-families-share-microbes-even-with-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/study-reveals-how-families-share-microbes-even-with-dogs\/","title":{"rendered":"Study reveals how families share microbes, even with dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study that began during the post-doctoral work of Northern Arizona University\u2019s Gregory Caporaso is shedding some light on how adults, and their dogs and kids, share microbial communities.<\/p>\n<p>And while you can try to blame your spring cold on the youngster of the house, it\u2019s actually the family dog that contributes more to adults sharing their microbiomes with one another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve been learning is the microbial communities that live in and on our bodies can play a big role in our health,\u201d said Caporaso, assistant professor of biology. \u201cWhat was exciting about this study was <a href=\"http:\/\/esciencenews.com\/articles\/2013\/04\/17\/cu.boulder.study.looks.microbial.differences.between.parents.kids.and.dogs\">how cohabitation affected microbial communities<\/a>. It\u2019s a unique data set.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all have bacteria in our digestive tract, but Caporaso explained that while any two humans are 99 percent identical in their genomes, their \u201cgut communities\u201d of bacteria may be up to 50 percent different. It\u2019s those differences that interest researchers, who seek to link them to the origins of obesity, malnutrition or even colon cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat factors are driving the differences between the microbial communities in my gut and your gut? This study was an attempt to see if who you\u2019re living with is one of the factors,\u201d Caporaso said.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, individuals from the same household\u2014particularly couples\u2014share more of their microbiome than they do with other individuals, and having a dog resulted in even a greater similarity because of shared contact with the animal.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, published in <a href=\"http:\/\/elife.elifesciences.org\"><i>eLIFE<\/i><\/a>, Caporaso assisted with data analysis and offered advice for statistical approaches. The senior author, associate professor Rob Knight of the University of Colorado Boulder, was Caporaso\u2019s post-doctoral adviser.<\/p>\n<p>At NAU, Caporaso\u2019s lab develops an <a href=\"http:\/\/qiime.org\">open-source software<\/a> package that is a leader in the field for studying microbial communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of these studies are enabled by our advances in DNA sequencing,\u201d Caporaso said. \u201cBioinformatics techniques enable the analysis of the massive quantities of data typically involved in these studies.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/study-reveals-how-families-share-microbes-even-with-dogs\/\">A study that began during the post-doctoral work of Northern Arizona University\u2019s Gregory Caporaso is shedding some light on how adults, and their dogs and kids, share microbial communities.
