{"id":16725,"date":"2009-07-01T13:36:47","date_gmt":"2009-07-01T20:36:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=16725"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:54:35","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:54:35","slug":"engineering-workshop-builds-teaching-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/engineering-workshop-builds-teaching-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering workshop builds teaching skills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Civil engineering educators from around the world will meet at NAU next week for workshops on building their teaching skills.<\/p>\n<p>The American Society of Civil Engineers is hosting its 11th Excellence in Civil Engineering Education Teaching Workshop at NAU from July 12-18.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Debra Larson<\/strong>, associate dean for the College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences, who helped organize the event, also is hosting two \u201cExCEEd\u201d teaching workshops.<\/p>\n<p>She will lead a workshop focusing on \u201ctried and true techniques\u201d for creating successful teaching and learning environments, as well as a new workshop for previous conference participants who are seeking advanced techniques for engaging engineering students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a highly regarded conference and it\u2019s an honor to host it and be involved with the creation of workshop content and mentoring activities,\u201d Larson said.<\/p>\n<p>Larson said the workshops provide nearly one-to-one mentoring from seasoned teachers and that \u201cfaculty often report the experience as career changing as they learn how to become a more effective teacher while being efficient with the management of their preparation time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The six-day practicum of seminars, demonstration classes and practice teaching sessions addresses improving skills in communications, organization, developing interpersonal rapport with students, teaching with technology and more.<\/p>\n<p>Seminars include a series of demonstration classes\u2014models of high-quality teaching\u2014presented by ExCEEd faculty mentors.
