{"id":1643,"date":"2012-03-02T08:30:03","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T15:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/?p=1643"},"modified":"2012-11-20T13:07:24","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T20:07:24","slug":"in-the-spotlight-march-02-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-march-02-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Spotlight: March 2, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Kudos to these faculty, staff and students<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<\/p>\n<p>E-mail your announcements to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anthropology professor\u00a0<strong>Jim Wilce<\/strong>\u00a0recently presented a paper, titled &#8220;Finnish Revivalist Lamenting as Sacred Therapy,&#8221; at an invited international conference on Religion, Healing and Psychiatry at Muenster University in Germany.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chris Looney<\/strong>, graduate student and research assistant in the School of Forestry, was lead author of a recently published research project in the international journal\u00a0<em>Plant and Soil<\/em>. \u201cPinyon Pine (<em>Pinus edulis<\/em>) Mortality and Response to Water Addition Across a Three Million-Year Substrate Age Gradient in Northern Arizona, USA,\u201d examines the tree species and its mortality during recent severe drought. Coauthors of the paper include\u00a0<strong>Jeffrey Kane<\/strong>, forestry graduate student,\u00a0<strong>Ben Sullivan<\/strong>, forestry doctoral graduate, and\u00a0<strong>Thomas Kolb<\/strong>, forestry professor. The paper is a result of Looney&#8217;s undergraduate research project, which was partially funded by the Hooper Undergraduate Research Program. The paper is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/b570134530568462\/fulltext.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1648\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1648\" title=\"grove\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/grove-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"group photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2012\/09\/grove-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2012\/09\/grove.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students and staff recently gathered in front off the ARD building to celebrate a $5,000 donation from The Grove and Campus Crest Communities to support the NAU Green Fund.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flagstaff\u2019s newest student housing development has yet to open its doors to tenants and already is investing in Northern Arizona University\u2019s sustainable practices.\u00a0<strong>The Grove<\/strong>\u00a0and its parent company<strong>\u00a0Campus Crest Communities<\/strong>\u00a0recently donated $5,000 to support the NAU\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/green.nau.edu\/green_fund\/default.aspx\">Green Fund<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>Bryan McLaren<\/strong>, coordinator in the Office of Sustainability, and\u00a0<strong>Lindsay Wagner<\/strong>, director in Capital Assets and Services, accepted the gift from Grove staff members Allicen Scott, Michael Hartnett and Mike Meehl.NAU students\u00a0<strong>Liz Wiggen<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Melody Hartke<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kevin Ordean<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Caryn Massey<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Nolan Bade\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Cori Cusker\u00a0<\/strong>also attended on behalf of the university.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Twenty-six students<\/strong>\u00a0from the TRIO Student Support Services program built more than 1,200 emergency food boxes for families of northern Arizona during National TRIO Day on Feb. 25. TRIO Day is a national service event focused on motivating and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are pursuing college degrees. The students and staff visited St. Mary\u2019s Food Bank in Flagstaff to make the food boxes that will be delivered to low-income families in the area.\u00a0<P>More than 2,900 federally-funded programs serve nearly one million first-generation students and students with disabilities nationally through the TRIO program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-march-02-2012\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
