{"id":16361,"date":"2009-06-17T13:42:18","date_gmt":"2009-06-17T20:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=16361"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:54:23","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:54:23","slug":"accessibility-affordability-accountability-highlight-abor-discussions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/accessibility-affordability-accountability-highlight-abor-discussions\/","title":{"rendered":"Accessibility, affordability, accountability highlight ABOR discussions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Discussion of a revised Arizona University System architecture to offer lower-cost options for baccalaureate degrees dominated much of the Arizona Board of Regents\u2019 meeting June 18 and 19 on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Details of the draft plan presented by the three university presidents to double baccalaureate production by 2020 to help Arizona attain national economic competitiveness is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abor.asu.edu\/1_the_regents\/meetings\/board_book\/2009-06-Jun\/Item-01-2009-06.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Regent\u00a0<strong>Ernest Calder\u00f3n<\/strong>, who becomes president of the board on July 1, cited the need to \u201ccreate immediate steps of affordability and accessibility.\u201d During a presentation to the board, Calder\u00f3n also outlined several other challenges and opportunities for the university system in the coming year, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>assessing space utilization at the universities to ensure the \u201cuse of limited space as efficiently and effectively as possible\u201d<\/li>\n<li>establishing an intercollegiate athletics ad hoc committee to review various aspects of athletics programs, including facilities, budgets and issues related to student-athletes and Title IX<\/li>\n<li>exploring opportunities for centralization in such areas as capital planning and audit and legal services<\/li>\n<li>investigating a student record system to track the entire K-20 pipeline of students<\/li>\n<li>making Arizona\u2019s universities the \u201cproviders of choice\u201d for online education of military veterans<\/li>\n<li>establishing additional competency exams for students to earn university credits<\/li>\n<li>ensuring both productivity and quality in academic programs, including an inventory of duplicative programs within the universities<\/li>\n<li>assessing contractual agreements<\/li>\n<li>possibly moving the tuition-setting board vote from the fall to March<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Calder\u00f3n also cited the need for greater public outreach by the regents and through the Solutions through Higher Education initiative, a public education effort aimed at raising awareness of the critical role higher education plays in ensuring economic prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>A similar theme of greater public outreach arose during university presentations on how they measure the performance of their research programs. See NAU\u2019s report\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2009\/6_24_09\/MeasuringResearchPerformance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe research component of our mission is under siege,\u201d said Regent\u00a0<strong>Anne Mariucci<\/strong>. She pointed to the \u201cill-conceived and short-sighted suggestion of pundits that research isn\u2019t necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Regent\u00a0<strong>Fred DuVal<\/strong>\u00a0acknowledged a fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers to demonstrate the return on investment from research.<\/p>\n<p>In other board action, the regents also approved the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>updating the dollar threshold where a class fee or deposit needs ABOR approval from $50 to $100<\/li>\n<li>project implementation for NAU\u2019s health and wellness center, which is largely funded by student fees; construction is expected to begin in September<\/li>\n<li>project implementation and approval for extending steam, chilled water, electrical utilities and telecommunications on the northeast end of campus; the project is linked with the health and wellness center<\/li>\n<li>a one-year contract extension for head football coach\u00a0<strong>Jerome Souers<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/accessibility-affordability-accountability-highlight-abor-discussions\/\">Discussion of a revised Arizona University System architecture to offer lower-cost options for baccalaureate degrees dominated much of the Arizona Board of Regents\u2019 meeting June 18 and 19 on campus.
