{"id":16146,"date":"2010-08-11T12:35:51","date_gmt":"2010-08-11T19:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=16146"},"modified":"2013-04-09T13:18:26","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T20:18:26","slug":"president-haeger-inducted-into-flagstaff-sports-foundation-hall-of-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/president-haeger-inducted-into-flagstaff-sports-foundation-hall-of-fame\/","title":{"rendered":"President Haeger inducted into Flagstaff Sports Foundation Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_ttjGcTO9lM\" height=\"315\" width=\"420\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>NAU President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>\u00a0accepted his induction into the Flagstaff Sports Foundation Hall of Fame on Aug. 3 to warm applause at the High Country Conference Center.<\/p>\n<p>He was inducted at the third annual Hall of Fame event for his continued efforts to enrich the partnership between the Arizona Cardinals, the university and the Flagstaff community, and for his steadfast support of NAU Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger accepted the award on behalf of former NAU presidents J. Lawrence Walkup, Eugene Hughes and Clara Lovett, who began the tradition of intercollegiate athletics at NAU and who built the campus facilities and established the relationships that make efforts like the Cardinals training camp possible.<\/p>\n<p>He noted the importance of the Cardinals\u2019 presence in Flagstaff in terms of boosting the economy and publicizing the small mountain town, saying NAU takes its role as an economic driver for this community seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Haeger early on recognized the economic importance to Flagstaff and the region to host the Cardinals,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Rich Bowen<\/strong>, associate vice president for Economic Development. \u201cHe worked very hard to develop a relationship that benefits NAU, Flagstaff and the Cardinals. The Bidwill family, the owners of the Cardinals, have great regard for Haeger and consider him one of the state\u2019s foremost leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before thanking the Flagstaff Sports Foundation, Haeger commended the other inductees\u2014former NAU Ice Jacks hockey coach<strong>\u00a0Doug Allan<\/strong>, former Lumberjacks\u2019 head athletic trainer<strong>\u00a0Mike Nesbitt<\/strong>, member of NAU\u2019s 1978 Big Sky championship football team<strong>\u00a0Ray Smith<\/strong>, and former Flagstaff High School football standout<strong>\u00a0David Carder.<\/strong>\u00a0Recognizing their role as both coaches and teachers, he stressed NAU\u2019s mission to keep intercollegiate athletes competing on the highest level on the field and in the classroom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/president-haeger-inducted-into-flagstaff-sports-foundation-hall-of-fame\/\">NAU President\u00a0John Haeger\u00a0accepted his induction into the Flagstaff Sports Foundation Hall of Fame on Aug. 3 to warm applause at the High Country Conference Center.
