{"id":16005,"date":"2009-11-10T15:00:44","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T22:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=16005"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:54:10","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:54:10","slug":"nau-grad-wins-teacher-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-grad-wins-teacher-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU grad wins Teacher of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another Northern Arizona University graduate has been named Arizona Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joy Weiss<\/strong>, who has taught at Balsz Elementary School in Phoenix for 10 years, was selected as the 2010 Teacher of the Year last week by the Arizona Educational Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis honor is a very humbling experience and will have a profound effect on the future of my teaching, as well as my educational career in the future,\u201d Weiss said. \u201cI will forever be shaped by this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weiss has a bachelor\u2019s degree in childhood education from Arizona State University and a master&#8217;s degree in education, curriculum and instruction from Northern Arizona University.<\/p>\n<p>Weiss, who was called \u201coutspoken\u201d by the\u00a0<em>Arizona Republic<\/em>, had high praise for both her undergraduate education and her time at NAU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe foundation that was laid during my bachelor&#8217;s degree with theory and practice prepared me when entering into the classroom for the first time,\u201d she said. \u201cDuring my first year of teaching, I realized that I had much more to learn and needed to grow quickly in my knowledge and skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She chose NAU based on the College of Education\u2019s reputation. \u201cMy master&#8217;s program with NAU gave me the enrichment and anchor I needed to solidify what I had learned during my bachelor&#8217;s and in the classroom,\u201d she said. \u201cNAU&#8217;s master&#8217;s program pushed me to think broader, more critically and engage in community learning through the cohort program\u2026My experience with NAU was enjoyable and I have been proud to share this with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Teacher of the Year honors, Weiss wins $20,000 in cash, a laptop from Intel Corp., a chance to compete for National Teacher of the Year, a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., a scholarship toward a doctorate degree from Argosy University and other benefits. She also will receive an honorary doctorate from NAU during spring commencement ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s Arizona Teacher of the Year was\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/teacher-of-the-year-award-goes-to-nau-grad\">Sarah Baird<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0a math coach in the Kyrene School District.
