Northern Arizona University\u2019s 2010-2011 Horizons Concert Series kicks off tomorrow with the first of five fall performances that spotlight international musicians.<\/p>\n

All performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ashurst Hall, unless otherwise noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe present events that people might not otherwise be able to experience,\u201d said\u00a0Todd Sullivan<\/strong>, director for the School of Music. \u201cWe\u2019re bringing the world of music and performance to Flagstaff.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series opens on Sept. 22 with \u201cFireworks: American Music for Violin\u201d featuring Fritz Gearhart on the violin and School of Music accompanist\u00a0Chen-Ju Janice Chiang<\/strong>\u00a0on the piano. The program will include diverse violin compositions by Lukas Foss, Quincy Porter, Livingston Gearhart, Fritz Gearhart and William Grant Still.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Shining Night: Songs by Samuel Barber,\u201d a cornucopia of songs by American composer Samuel Barber, will take place on Sept. 27. The performance will feature tenor Steven Paul Spears with faculty pianist\u00a0Rita Borden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Oct.18, pianist Jeffery Swann will perform \u201cRomantic Fantasy II.\u201d Swann will be joined by several NAU music faculty including Borden (piano),\u00a0Judith Cloud<\/strong>\u00a0(mezzo-soprano),\u00a0John Masserini<\/strong>\u00a0(clarinet),\u00a0Ricardo Pereira<\/strong>\u00a0(tenor),\u00a0Mary Ann Ramos<\/strong>\u00a0(cello),\u00a0Deborah Raymond\u00a0<\/strong>(soprano),\u00a0Robert Allen Saunders<\/strong>\u00a0(bass),\u00a0Frank Scott<\/strong>\u00a0(piano),\u00a0Louise Scott<\/strong>\u00a0(violin) and\u00a0Jacquelyn Schwandt<\/strong>\u00a0(viola).On Oct. 11, Ivano Ascari will perform the program \u201cItalia Moderna\u201d with School of Music faculty\u00a0Stephen Dunn<\/strong>\u00a0on trumpet, percussionist\u00a0Steve Hemphill<\/strong>\u00a0and pianist\u00a0Brian Lockard<\/strong>. \u201cItalia Moderna\u201d features contemporary music by Italian and American composers. The performance will take place in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium.<\/p>\n

On Nov. 15, the Mana Saxophone Quartet, all former students in the NAU School of Music, will return to campus for the first time since their triumph as Grand Prize winners at the 2009 Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. The quartet\u2019s repertoire ranges from American modernist composer Charles Wuorinen to Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla.<\/p>\n
