{"id":15232,"date":"2009-05-06T12:05:46","date_gmt":"2009-05-06T19:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=15232"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:51:45","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:51:45","slug":"aps-solar-project-has-research-impact-on-nau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/aps-solar-project-has-research-impact-on-nau\/","title":{"rendered":"APS solar project has research impact on NAU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona Public Service has invited Northern Arizona University to partner with the utility on research opportunities that will arise from its proposed renewable-energy project in Doney Park.<\/p>\n<p>APS is proposing to outfit 200 to 300 homes and businesses in the east Flagstaff area with solar panels to create a \u201crenewable power plant.\u201d The solar panels will be installed at no cost to the home or business owner. The utility also will establish small-scale wind turbines.<\/p>\n<p>The rates for the portion of electricity provided by the solar panels will be fixed for 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>APS announced plans for the Community Power Project on Monday in the APS Atrium in NAU\u2019s Applied Research and Development building. \u201cWhat a perfect environment to announce such an innovative project,\u201d said NAU President<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>, referring to the LEED Platinum-rated building. \u201cNorthern Arizona University and APS have had a solid partnership for years, and this project can only build upon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura Huenneke<\/strong>, vice president for Research, sees a big potential for research projects for all of NAU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to learn that APS envisions this pilot as a research project and that they are interested in partnering with NAU faculty, staff and students,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u201cIn fact, they are creating a living laboratory here in Flagstaff for all kinds of research into both technical and human aspects of renewable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<table width=\"10%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"3\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"aps\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/aps-200x300.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nIN a gathering at NAU&#8217;s ARD building, APS chairman and CEO Don Brandt unveiled the utilities proposal for a solar project in east Flagstaff.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Possible research projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What influence does participation in the program have on the actual energy consumption patterns in a household?<\/li>\n<li>What analytical or information management tools might APS make use of in integrating and managing the massive flow of data from the many sensors in their \u201csmart grid\u201d investment?<\/li>\n<li>What opportunities are there to improve upon the sensors (and the collection of information from them) being integrated into the grid?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cOver the years APS has been a great friend and partner to the university, and we will be very happy to lend our expertise in sustainability to this leading-edge project,\u201d Heunekke said.<\/p>\n<p>APS submitted its plans to the Arizona Corporation Commission on Monday. The commission is expected to act on the proposal in late summer or early fall.<\/p>\n<p>During Monday\u2019s announcement, Don Brandt, APS chairman and CEO, said the utility chose the Flagstaff area because \u201cit is a progressive, forward-thinking community and because of our relationship with NAU and Dr. Haeger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flagstaff Mayor Sara Presler also praised the project. \u201cWe were most excited to learn we were chosen for this project,\u201d she said. \u201cThe message we\u2019re sending today (about renewable energy) is exactly what the country is looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also was pleased that jobs will be created by APS\u2019s partnerships with local businesses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/aps-solar-project-has-research-impact-on-nau\/\">Arizona Public Service has invited Northern Arizona University to partner with the utility on research opportunities that will arise from its proposed renewable-energy project in Doney Park.
