{"id":14737,"date":"2009-12-01T11:48:40","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T18:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=14737"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:51:33","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:51:33","slug":"professor-wins-national-competition-songs-performed-at-carnegie-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/professor-wins-national-competition-songs-performed-at-carnegie-hall\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor wins national competition, songs performed at Carnegie Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most composers just dream about hearing their music played at New York City\u2019s Carnegie Hall, but for\u00a0<strong>Judith Cloud<\/strong>\u00a0it became a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud, a composer and vocal studies professor at Northern Arizona University, took first prize at the recent 2009 Sorel Medallion Choral Composition Competition for her original work,<em>Anacreontics<\/em>, for chorus and guitar.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the three women finalists in the competition, Cloud\u2019s composition was performed in Carnegie Hall\u2019s Zankel Hall by the Voices of Ascension Choir, one of the country\u2019s foremost choirs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quality of their performance was really superb with all of the music performed that evening,\u201d Cloud said. \u201cIt was indeed a special night listening to the music of the other women composers and then hearing Bach&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Magnificat<\/em>\u00a0that ended the program. What an honor to have my music performed in the same evening with Bach&#8217;s!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition, sponsored by the Elizabeth &amp; Michel Sorel Charitable Organization, is one of the premier composition competitions for women worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I found out that once again my music had been chosen as one of the three compositions for the winners&#8217; concert I was thrilled,\u201d Cloud said. \u201cLast year my composition<em>Mesa Songs<\/em>\u00a0for chorus, Native American flute, drum, and rain stick won the third prize for this competition, and I was encouraged to enter again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recording grants often are awarded to finalists in the competition. Cloud has applied for a grant to record some of the works she has composed for solo voice in a CD with Summit Records titled \u201c<em>&#8230;letting escape a song<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt features a number of singers and pianists who I have been composing for within the last several years, including myself and our own NAU music faculty members\u00a0<strong>Deborah Raymond<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ricardo Pereira<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Rita Borden<\/strong>,\u201d said Cloud, who is currently working on composing songs to poems of E.E.
