{"id":14550,"date":"2009-04-29T12:31:01","date_gmt":"2009-04-29T19:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=14550"},"modified":"2013-05-07T15:36:48","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T22:36:48","slug":"spotlight-4-29-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spotlight-4-29-2009\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Spotlight: April 29, 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Kudos to these faculty, staff and students<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<\/p>\n<p>E-mail your announcements to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Brant Short<\/strong>, professor of speech communication, spoke at Glendale Community College on April 9 to approximately 200 students, faculty and staff in a lecture titled, &#8220;Communication Can Save Your Life: Five Life Lessons from Communication Theory.&#8221; Short also met with seniors graduating in May through NAU and GCC&#8217;s 2+2 degree program.<\/li>\n<li>The Commission on Disability Access and Design Leadership recently presented an overall leadership award to the\u00a0<strong>School of Forestry<\/strong>\u00a0for its model for accessibility and universal design in the classroom, and for creating a way for students with disabilities to participate in fieldwork: a critical hands-on learning component in the educational forestry experience.\u00a0<strong>James Allen<\/strong>, executive director for the school, and forestry undergraduate\u00a0<strong>Ryan Thomas<\/strong>, accepted the award on behalf of the School of Forestry.<\/li>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14552\" style=\"width: 252px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14552\" alt=\"etruscan art\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/etruscan.jpg\" width=\"252\" height=\"155\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Decorative plaque the exhibition, From the Temple to the Tomb: Etruscan Treasures from Tuscany. 540-520 B.C.E. Ivory, Florence, National Museum of Archeology.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Alexandra Carpino<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Humanities, Arts and Religion and associate professor of art history, presented a lecture, \u201cDeath, Decapitation and Dismemberment on Etruscan Bronze Mirrors,\u201d earlier this month at the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.\u00a0Her lecture was held in conjunction with the exhibition,\u00a0<em>From the Temple to the Tomb: Etruscan Treasures from Tuscany.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><\/em><strong>Troy Hutchings<\/strong>, director of Student Services in the College of Education and a faculty member in the college, was named the recipient of the 2009 Doug Bates Memorial Award. The award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of educator ethics and professional practice. Hutchings also will be giving the annual Doug Bates lecture, which will accompany the award presented at the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification\u2019s annual conference June 2 in Jacksonville, Fla.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mary I. Dereshiwsky<\/strong>, professor of educational leadership, presented a webinar on effective strategies for peer mentoring of online instructors to the Learning Resources Network this month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jut Wynne<\/strong>, a doctoral student in biology and cave research scientist with Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research, and Charles Drost from the Colorado Plateau Research Station, published &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/fs\/2009\/3024\/\" target=\"_blank\">Southwest Caves Reveal New Forms of Life<\/a>,&#8221; a USGS factsheet showcasing three new genera and 15 new species recently discovered from caves in northern Arizona. The document will be used for educational outreach to emphasize the fragility and importance of cave ecosystems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shawn Skabelund<\/strong>, lecturer in the School of Art, published \u201cExcavating Destiny: A Conversation with Shawn Skabelund,\u201d in\u00a0<em>Sculpture<\/em>\u00a0magazine&#8217;s May 2009 issue.<\/li>\n<li>Four faculty members, 10 graduate students and one undergraduate student from the School of Communication recently presented papers or participated at the Western Social Science Association annual meeting in Albuquerque, N.M.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jerry Thull<\/strong>, lecturer in public relations, presented \u201cBridging the Media Divide in the Classroom: Instructional Strategies for Contemporary Students.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jon Torn<\/strong>, assistant professor of electronic media and film, presented \u201cGive It Away Now: The World of New Media in the New Era of Free.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dayle Hardy-Short\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Brant Short<\/strong>, professors of speech communication, both moderated panels and served as section coordinators for the Human Communication Studies section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following graduate students in the applied communication program presented papers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Emilly Borthwick:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cBristol Palin and Jaime Lynn Spears, Celebrity or Private Figure: The Intimacy Created by\u00a0<em>ShowBiz Tonight<\/em>\u201d and \u201cNative American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act: How It Affected a Native Hawaiian Conflict.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amanda Carrillo:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cAmerican\u2019s Toughest Sheriff: The Use of Immigration Appeals in Sheriff Joe Arpaio\u2019s 2008 Reelection Campaign\u201d and \u201cCommunication Apprehension and Cultural Issues in the Classroom: A Review of the Literature.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diana Cudeii:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe Political Life of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, 2008 Presidential Candidate.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anthony R.
