{"id":14355,"date":"2013-04-08T09:28:42","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T16:28:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=14355"},"modified":"2013-04-09T14:34:50","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T21:34:50","slug":"nau-partnership-opens-high-powered-geospatial-technology-to-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-partnership-opens-high-powered-geospatial-technology-to-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Partnership opens \u2018hot\u2019 geospatial field to schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those with a smartphone, or GPS in the dash of their car, geospatial technology is as close as their fingertips and as easy as a spoken command.<\/p>\n<p>Now the impressive power behind that technology\u2014and the critical-thinking skills it can develop and unleash\u2014is <a href=\"http:\/\/grail.nau.edu\/esrik12\">available free<\/a> to schools and youth organizations throughout Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>ESRI ArcMap, a desktop geographic information system software with online organizational access, may now be obtained through a statewide site license negotiated with ESRI and co-sponsored by Northern Arizona University, the <a href=\"http:\/\/geoalliance.asu.edu\/azga\/\">Arizona Geographic Alliance<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/arcgis2.geo.az.gov\/agic\/welcome-agic\">Arizona Geographic Information Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<table width=\"250\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"color: #61003d;\"><strong>Workshop scheduled<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>Those wishing to learn how to obtain the license and gain some firsthand experience may <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/event\/5490405952\">attend an informational workshop<\/a>\u00a0from 2:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4,\u00a0at Mesa Community College. The workshop is located in the Social\/Cultural Science Building (Building SC), Room SC26.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u201cArcMap is the industry standard for solving problems in a spatial way,\u201d said Lori Rubino-Hare, professional development coordinator at NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/cefns\/cstl\/\">Center for Science Teaching and Learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of that problem solving provides us with GPS maps, which result from layers of data points in a spreadsheet that are sorted by queries.<\/p>\n<p>While industry uses the complex tool to map and manage large amounts of data to assist in making decisions, Rubino-Hare said, there are plenty of educational applications in K-12 schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents should be using that kind of power to solve problems while developing their spatial and creative thinking skills,\u201d she said, speaking from firsthand knowledge. After using the program for years as a middle school teacher, she now advises science teachers, through grants from Science Foundation Arizona and the National Science Foundation, how to integrate data and field investigations into their classrooms through ArcMap.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant professor Mark Manone directs NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grail.nau.edu\/index.html\">Geospatial Research and Information Laboratory<\/a>, which hosts the software site license. Through a website, it may be acquired for free by public, charter, private and home schools, in addition to nonprofit youth organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing the software will help increase students\u2019 ability to acquire geospatial skills and enhance critical spatial thinking, which is a key tenet to all aspects of STEM learning,\u201d Manone said.<\/p>\n<p>Although the software itself and its emerging scientific field sound complicated, Manone said, students and their parents have good reason to want access through school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeographic information systems and geospatial technologies are hot fields for job opportunities,\u201d Manone said. \u201cThis gives students the opportunity to get in with this new technology prior to getting to the university level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just hard-science jobs that are out there, Manone said. The technology is being used in \u201canything that deals with location-based information,\u201d from city planners to business marketing. \u201cIt\u2019s an emerging field that\u2019s going to provide for career paths in diverse areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers need not hesitate either, Manone said, because a variety of advances make the technology \u201cready to be used by K-12 institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives teachers the opportunity to dive into a world that they might not normally have access to,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t need months of training.
