As home to 2,014 Native American students representing more than 70 different tribes, it\u2019s no wonder that Northern Arizona University knows how to celebrate Native American Heritage Month with style.<\/p>\n
A lineup of more than 40 events featuring everything from a tribal feast to basket-making demonstrations, dancing, photography exhibits and indigenous-author book signings at the NAU Bookstore offers up a diverse sampler of cultural and educational activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cNative American Heritage month provides an opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions made by the first peoples of this land,\u201d said\u00a0Sharon Doctor<\/strong>, assistant director for Native American Student Services. \u201cThroughout history, Native Americans have influenced the landscape of this country and are continually enriching urban and rural communities.”<\/p>\n Congress has designated Nov. 26 as Native American Heritage Day.<\/p>\n Some highlights are the talk \u201cGoverning a Non-Indian Reorganization Act Native Nation<\/a>,\u201d by Ernie Jones, Sr., detailing his experiences as a president of the Yavapai-Prescott Nation at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, in the Bellwood Auditorium at SBS West and the Miss Indian NAU pageant at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in Ashurst Hall.<\/p>\n For a complete listing of events, click\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
