{"id":14087,"date":"2009-04-29T14:53:28","date_gmt":"2009-04-29T21:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=14087"},"modified":"2013-05-14T08:59:08","modified_gmt":"2013-05-14T15:59:08","slug":"senior-music-major-named-to-usa-todays-college-academic-team-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/senior-music-major-named-to-usa-todays-college-academic-team-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior music major named to &#8216;USA Today&#8217;s&#8217; College Academic Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Northern Arizona University undergraduate student from Henderson, Nev., is one of only 60 students nationwide named to\u00a0<em>USA Today&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0All-USA College Academic Team program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hesham Elnagar<\/strong>, a senior music major in NAU&#8217;s Honors Program, was named to the newspaper\u2019s Third Team and is being recognized for his outstanding intellectual achievement and leadership. Students\u2019 names were published in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/education\/2009-04-29-college-all-stars_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\">today&#8217;s issue of\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elnagar was singled out for his research and efforts to promote community service, volunteerism and civic engagement among college students at NAU and beyond. His senior thesis is a proposal to create a service-learning component for NAU\u2019s Honors Program, with the potential to be easily adapted for colleges and universities nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recognition says that Hesham can and will succeed\u2014along with the very best students nationwide\u2014in affecting our communities and universities for the better,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Anne Scott,<\/strong>\u00a0professor of English, who nominated Elnagar for the award.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of students from colleges and universities across the United States were nominated for the honor and a panel of judges selected 20 students each for the First, Second and Third Teams. Judges considered grades, leadership, activities and, most important, how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Elnagar said he was \u201cshocked\u201d after learning of his\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em>\u00a0recognition. \u201cIt\u2019s very flattering, but it also gives me a drive to continue with my work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt NAU, I\u2019ve grown not just as a student, but as a person,\u201d he added. \u201cThese last four years have been really transformative and I have a deeper understanding of where my passions lie in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time an NAU student has been named to the team\u2014in 2006\u00a0<strong>Robert Buscaglia<\/strong>\u00a0was the first\u2014and the ranking places Elnagar among some of the nation&#8217;s top college and university students.<\/p>\n<p>Only two other Arizona students were recognized by\u00a0<em>USA Today<\/em>. Charlene Bashore from Litchfield Park, Ariz. was named to the First Team and Eric Anderson from Phoenix was named to the Second Team. Both attend Arizona State University.<\/p>\n<p>It has been an award-winning season for Elnagar, who earlier this month was recognized as the Distinguished Senior for NAU\u2019s College of Arts and Letters. He also received the university\u2019s Gold Axe Award, as well as the prestigious President&#8217;s Prize, considered the highest student recognition from the university.<\/p>\n<p>Criteria for the All-USA College Academic Team were developed in consultation with\u00a0<em>USA Today&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0education co-sponsors: the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the American Council on Education and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
