{"id":13773,"date":"2010-10-14T13:11:07","date_gmt":"2010-10-14T20:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=13773"},"modified":"2013-03-05T14:42:32","modified_gmt":"2013-03-05T21:42:32","slug":"thin-technologies-yield-big-reward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/thin-technologies-yield-big-reward\/","title":{"rendered":"Thin technologies yield big reward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAU\u2019s efforts to create a sustainable, green campus earned another recognition, winning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.oracle.com\/oracleopenworld\/entry\/enable_the_eco-enterprise_awar\">Oracle\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0\u201cEnable the Eco-Enterprise\u201d award.<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s innovative use of Oracle products and green business practices has reduced NAU\u2019s environmental footprint, cut costs and improved efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ClimateActionPlan1.pdf\">Carbon Neutrality Climate Action Plan 2010<\/a>, Information Technology Services teamed up with the business and engineering colleges to enact the \u201cI\u2019m thin and I\u2019m green\u201d campaign spearheaded by\u00a0<strong>Heather Farley<\/strong>, program coordinator for the Office of Sustainability, and\u00a0<strong>Richard Toeniskoetter,<\/strong>\u00a0ITS manager for the W.A. Franke College of Business.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cI\u2019m thin and I\u2019m green\u201d campaign enhances sustainability on three main fronts.<\/p>\n<p>First, NAU deployed 600 Sun Ray thin clients. Farley describes the thin client as \u201ca small thin box that runs your computer off of a server.\u201d The system is \u201csignificantly more energy efficient running at 3-15 watts versus a CPU that runs up to 200 watts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second, thin client technology acts to eliminate waste because it lengthens the amount of time before desktop computers need to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, NAU employs Oracle Secure Global Desktops, which allows students to access applications needed for their courses from any location at any time without purchasing that application. Students accessed this software 32,000 times last academic year, reducing the number of visits they took to campus and therefore reducing traffic congestion and possible carbon emissions associated with that trip.<\/p>\n<p>NAU has successfully reduced its electrical consumption, resource usage and e-waste disposal on campus while offering anywhere, anytime computing services to students.<\/p>\n<p>NAU also is continuing to drive change on campus, from developing environmentally sustainable buildings, integrating sustainability concepts in curriculum, greening operations and being stewards in the community, as part of its designation as a charter signatory of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org\/\">American College and University Presidents\u2019 Climate Commitment<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/thin-technologies-yield-big-reward\/\">NAU\u2019s efforts to create a sustainable, green campus earned another recognition, winning\u00a0Oracle\u2019s\u00a0\u201cEnable the Eco-Enterprise\u201d award.
