Elliott, steadfast supporter of NAU, dies at 85"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Navy V-12 college training brought\u00a0<strong>Harold Leaumont Elliott<\/strong>\u00a0from Yuma to Arizona State Teachers College in Flagstaff at the height of World War II in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>His dedication to what is now known as Northern Arizona University brought him back to the mountain town after his military service, where he earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in 1949 and master\u2019s degree in 1951 and became an invaluable supporter of NAU for nearly 60 years to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Elliott\u2019s continued involvement with the university led him to play an integral role in building partnerships between the university and Arizona Western College and Yavapai College, paving the way for today\u2019s 2+2 programs and the establishment of campuses in Yuma and Prescott Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Elliott died Dec. 24, 2010, in Yuma. He is survived by his wife of 59 years,\u00a0<strong>Marion<\/strong>, who also is an alum and ardent supporter of NAU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold was an inspiration to many to pursue an education in this state and at this university,\u201d NAU President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>\u00a0said. \u201cHe and Marion have dedicated their lives to encouraging others to succeed in education and they invested their time and money into making that a reality for many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate student, Mr. Elliott was a member of the NAU football, baseball and wrestling teams, but his most decorated days came in the decades after he graduated.<\/p>\n<table width=\"332\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"10\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"310\">\n<table width=\"319\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"295\" height=\"327\">\n<table width=\"297\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"295\">\n<h3>Services planned for Saturday in Yuma<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<hr noshade=\"noshade\" \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td height=\"283\">Harold Elliott was born to F.E. Elliott I and Olga Leaumont Elliott in Somerton, Ariz., on June 28, 1925. He attended Somerton schools K-8 and graduated from Yuma Union High School in 1943.Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife, Marion; daughters Diana (William) Austin of Roanoke, Va., and Linda (Randall) Elliott-Nelson of Yuma; four grandchildren, a great-grandson and two nephews.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at St. Paul\u2019s Episcopal Church in Yuma. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to any of the Harold and Marion Elliott scholarships established at the Flagstaff, Yuma and Prescott campuses through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.nau.edu\/Giving.aspx\">NAU Foundation<\/a>, PO Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>While Mr. Elliott worked with the NAU Alumni Association, Mrs. Elliott served on the NAU Foundation board. The Elliotts established several endowed funds and scholarships at NAU including the F. E. and Olga Elliott Sr. Memorial NAU-Yuma Scholarship, the Harold L. and Marion L. Elliott Scholarship, the Elliott Endowed Scholarship at NAU-Yavapai and the Elliott Scholarship for Visual Arts and Art Education.<\/p>\n<p>The Elliotts received NAU Alumni Achievement Awards, Alumni Service Awards, Centennial Awards, as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alumni.nau.edu\/articles.aspx?articleid=34\">Joe and Marie Rolle Spirit of NAU Award<\/a>\u00a0for their enthusiastic and unwavering support of the university. Mr. Elliott received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from NAU in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/2000-students-to-take-part-in-dec-15-commencement\/\">2006<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The couple was presented with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/harold-and-marion-elliott-win-2010-regents-award\/\">Arizona Board of Regents Award<\/a>\u00a0for Outstanding Service to Education last year. The award recognizes Arizona citizens and organizations that provide exceptional service to higher education in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an honor to work side by side with him and, over the years, to develop a good friendship,\u201d said Regent\u00a0<strong>Ernest Calder\u00f3n<\/strong>, president emeritus of the board and an NAU alumnus.<\/p>\n<p>Calder\u00f3n first met Mr. Elliott while both were serving on an NAU presidential candidate search committee in 1978. \u201cHe was devoted to Northern Arizona University and higher education\u2026almost as much as he was to his family and his country. The Arizona Board of Regents was very proud when Harold and Marion accepted our highest honor, the Regents Award. I miss him already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Elliott chose a professional career in education, first as a math teacher and athletic coach at Kingman High School, then as vice principal and principal of Kofa High School in Yuma. After working for more than 20 years in public education, he retired in 1975 and shifted his efforts to his investment company.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Elliott was a respected community leader in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yumasun.com\/news\/yuma-66503-harold-principal.html\">Yuma<\/a>\u00a0through his service on the Mayor\u2019s Council on Higher\u00a0Education, Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
