The winners are:\n<ul>\n<li>Most Promising New Scholar:\u00a0<strong>Okim Kang<\/strong>, assistant professor of English.<\/li>\n<li>Most Significant Artistic\/Creative Work:\u00a0<strong>Ricardo Guthrie<\/strong>, assistant professor of ethnic studies<\/li>\n<li>Most Promising Graduate Student Researcher:\u00a0<strong>Emily Cope<\/strong>, biological sciences<\/li>\n<li>Most Promising Undergraduate Student Researcher:\u00a0<strong>Jai Rideout<\/strong>, computer science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Donelle Ruwe<\/strong>, associate professor of English and literature coordinator, was elected co-president of the 18th- and 19th-century British Women Writer\u2019s Association, a national scholarly organization devoted to the recovery and study of texts by early women writers. Ruwe also has been selected to serve a three-year term on the three-member committee that awards the prestigious Lion and the Unicorn Award for Excellence in North American Poetry for Children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1341\" title=\"911\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/911-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Civic Service Institute volunteers\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2012\/09\/911-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2012\/09\/911.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>NAU\u2019s Civic Service Institute<\/strong>\u00a0and community volunteers marked the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks through a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The group placed flags representing each victim on the lawn in front of Flagstaff City Hall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jeff Kane<\/strong>, who earned his PhD in forest science in August, is one of three authors of \u201cConsequences of Widespread Tree Mortality Triggered by Drought and Temperature Stress,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nclimate\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nclimate1635.html\">published online<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>Nature Climate Change<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leandra Thomas<\/strong>, a graduate student in NAU\u2019s bilingual\/multicultural education program,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/navajotimes.com\/entertainment\/culture\/index.php\">was crowned Miss Navajo Nation<\/a>\u00a0at last week\u2019s 2012-13 Miss Navajo Nation pageant in Window Rock, Ariz.
