If we continue down this path, by 2014 Arizona will have accumulated a budget deficit of $13 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor noted, \u201cIf we don\u2019t do it now, we won\u2019t get Arizona turned around. We are facing a catastrophe. We have to do it together and join hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ernest Calder\u00f3n<\/strong>, vice president of the Arizona Board of Regents, told Brewer, \u201cGovernor, you have our word (of the regents and three universities) that we will continue to cooperate with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Jan Brewer doesn\u2019t succeed as governor, everybody in this room, your children and your grandchildren will fail,\u201d Calder\u00f3n told the audience of about 100. \u201cThe trump card she has in her pocket is you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor shared her five-point plan to resolve the current fiscal crisis, which includes:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Reforming the budget process by increasing the size and restricting the use of the \u201cRainy Day\u201d fund; limiting fund sweeps; and using reliable revenue estimates<\/li>\n<li>Providing fiscal flexibility with Proposition 105\u2014the Voter Protection Act<\/li>\n<li>Further spending cuts to reduce the general fund by $1 billion<\/li>\n<li>Providing tax reform to attract business and create jobs<\/li>\n<li>Instituting a temporary tax increase to generate $1 billion annually<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The temporary tax increase is necessary to preserve education, public safety and public health, Brewer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation,\u201d she added, \u201cis one of the most important things the government should provide and has provided to the people of Arizona.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/governor-urges-collaboration-on-budget-solution\/\">Economic recovery for Arizona hinges on acting quickly and working cooperatively, Gov.
