{"id":1261,"date":"2012-08-15T11:36:03","date_gmt":"2012-08-15T18:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/?p=1261"},"modified":"2012-10-29T15:51:04","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T22:51:04","slug":"pervious-concrete-fails-ard-lot-receiving-asphalt-replacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/pervious-concrete-fails-ard-lot-receiving-asphalt-replacement\/","title":{"rendered":"Pervious concrete fails, ARD lot receiving asphalt replacement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pervious concrete that was part of the construction of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/green.nau.edu\/building\/ard.aspx\">Applied Research and Development<\/a>\u00a0building has failed, forcing NAU to use asphalt to replace it for at least the near future.<\/p>\n<p>When the ARD building opened in 2007, it featured an experimental use of pervious concrete\u2014the first in the state. However, the material failed\u2014and became dangerous\u2014in Flagstaff\u2019s freeze-and-thaw climate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concrete deteriorated to such a condition as to make the parking lot unsafe,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Jennus Burton<\/strong>, vice president for Finance and Administration. He said there were several reports of &#8220;tripping hazards\u00a0and twisted ankles, especially during the winter months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company that installed the parking lot has gone bankrupt, and so far NAU has been unable to find pervious material that is acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>\u00a0has asked Burton to establish a committee to investigate other paving materials for the Flagstaff campus.\u00a0NAU staff and faculty who are interested in participating may email\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Jennus.Burton@nau.edu\">Jennus.Burton@nau.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ARD building will retain its\u00a0<a title=\"Green NAU goes \u2018Platinum\u2019 with Applied Research and Development building\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/green-nau-goes-platinum-with-applied-research-and-development-building\/\">LEED Platinum certification<\/a>.
