The paper argues that monolingual American business people may find themselves at a disadvantage in the global economy and offers a model to incorporate a language in higher education professional programs.<\/li>\n<li>Two faculty members, seven graduate students and two recent graduates participated at the Western Social Science Association\u2019s annual meeting in Reno, Nev. April 15-18. Communication professors\u00a0<strong>Dayle Hardy-Short<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Brant Short<\/strong>\u00a0served as leaders for the Human Communication section of meeting and planned the 2010 panels that featured paper presentations from the following graduate students in the applied communication program:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tracie Hansen<\/strong>\u00a0received an honorable mention in the association&#8217;s graduate student paper competition for her paper, \u201c\u2018Live from New York\u2019: How One Late-Night Comedy Sketch Furthers Stereotypes of Women in Politics.\u201d Hansen also presented \u201cThis Old Man: The Shared Meaning of New Hampshire\u2019s \u2018Great Stone Face.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emily Borthwick\u00a0<\/strong>presented<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cSydney Bristow, The Perfect Corporate Role Model: An Analysis of \u2018Alias.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diana Cudeii<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cThe Narrative Approach of Native American Woman Leader, Annie Dodge Wauneka: \u2018I\u2019ll go and do more.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anthony R. Cuttitta<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201c\u2018Eco-terror\u2019 as Ideograph.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thomas Gariepy<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cMinuteman Rhetoric: The Language of Today\u2019s Nativism.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kevin Snyder<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cA Voice Crying Out in the Wilderness: Barack Obama\u2019s Global Jeremiad,\u201d and also \u201cAristotle, EPPM, and Armageddon: The Effectiveness of Fear Appeals in Al Gore\u2019s Documentary \u2018An Inconvenient Truth.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sahar Razavi<\/strong>, a graduate student in political science, presented \u201cThe Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: Gender and Sexuality in Modern Iran.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rachel Oertel<\/strong>, who received her master\u2019s in applied communication in 2009, presented \u201cThe Hillary Clinton Army: A Case Study of Voter Involvement, Repersonalizing Campaigns and Visual Rhetoric in Politics.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patricia A. Keesee<\/strong>, a graduate of the applied communication program, presented \u201cThe Influence of Attachment Styles on Responses to Dissatisfaction, and Relationship Disengagement Strategies in Romantic Relationships,\u201d which she coauthored with NAU communication professor\u00a0<strong>Laura Umphrey<\/strong>\u00a0and John Sherblom, communication professor from the University of Maine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alicyn Gitlin<\/strong>, a doctoral student in biology, took the second place award of $300 in a Science Foundation Arizona competition in which graduate students were to show the relevance of their research in everyday applications.
