Smith<\/strong>, senior research specialist at Bilby Research Center, recently published their team\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/pitches\/nature09839_proof1.pdf\">study<\/a>, \u201cExtended Megadroughts in the Southwestern United States During Pleistocene Interglacials,\u201d in\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>, the prestigious international journal of science.<\/p>\n<table width=\"45%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"14%\"><\/td>\n<td width=\"11%\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"listen\" src=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/images\/photos\/2011\/3_21_11\/listen.gif\" width=\"30\" height=\"29\" \/><\/td>\n<td width=\"75%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicbroadcasting.net\/knau\/news.newsmain\/article\/0\/13\/1779754\/KNAU.and.Arizona..News\/New.Study.Suggests.Southwest.Is.Headed.For.A.Mega.Drought\">Listen to Scott Anderson discuss his<br \/>\nresearch in a recent interview with KNAU<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>While the historical record they examined\u2014preserved in sediment cores removed from Valle Caldera in New Mexico\u2014provided insight into the climate and environment 250,000 to 500,000 years ago, the findings may have implications for future resource management in the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are trending toward drier, warmer conditions,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cIn the record, under natural conditions, the monsoons failed, and that period lasted hundreds of years. Natural conditions could be compounded by the effects of human-caused climate change, perhaps flipping us into a different climate state, with a greater likelihood of seeing a &#8216;megadrought&#8217; in the region that will could last for centuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anderson said droughts also cause stress in trees, leaving them prone to infestation and forest fires. \u201cWe are looking at diminished availability of water, and likelihood of major fires like last year\u2019s Schultz Fire.
