It follows a theater company that finds it has lost its funding and must get creative to keep the show alive.<\/p>\n<p>Originally written by Carlo Goldoni, the play adheres to the principles of\u00a0<em>commedia dell&#8217;arte<\/em>, an Italian style of comedy that uses fixed social types. The characters use masks to heighten the physical comedy and often engage in improvisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emotion of this play\u2014and of all\u00a0<em>commedia dell&#8217;arte<\/em>\u2014comes from the physical work,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Kathleen M. McGeever,\u00a0<\/strong>chair of the theater department and director of the production. \u201cThere is an innocence and honesty with these archetypes. What was true of humanity then is true now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NAU Theater students comprise the cast and include\u00a0<strong>Tony Latham<\/strong>\u00a0as Truffaldino, Viola Award nominee\u00a0<strong>Angela Kriese<\/strong>\u00a0as Smeraldina,<strong>Travis Marsala<\/strong>\u00a0as Pantalone, and\u00a0<strong>Alex Oliver<\/strong>\u00a0as Dottore.<\/p>\n<p>Costume design is by\u00a0<strong>Jennifer Peterson<\/strong>; mask design is by\u00a0<strong>Patrick Battles<\/strong>; scenic design by\u00a0<strong>Kate Ellis<\/strong>; lighting and sound design is by\u00a0<strong>Ben Alexander<\/strong>; the charge artist is\u00a0<strong>Rachel Solis<\/strong>; and\u00a0<strong>Nicole Jones<\/strong>\u00a0is the stage manager.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a 10-minute pre-curtain discussion 30 minutes before each performance.<\/p>\n<p>The show runs at 8 p.m. April 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23, and at 2 p.m. April 17.
