Mark Montoya,\u00a0<\/strong>ethnic studies instructor, presented the paper, \u201cHeadless Bodies and Brainless Politicians: The Citizenship Problem in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands,\u201d at the Association for Borderlands Studies Annual Meetings, last month in Salt Lake City.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mary I. Dereshiwsky<\/strong>, professor of educational leadership, presented two co-authored research papers at the Teaching, Colleges and Community international web-based higher education conference in April. The first, \u201cAssessing the Comparative Effectiveness of Teaching Undergraduate Intermediate Accounting in the Online Classroom Format,\u201d was co-authored with Anne Rich. The second, co-authored with NAU doctoral candidate\u00a0<strong>Maureen Flores<\/strong>, was \u201cThe Impact of Learning Styles on Academic Achievement in Web-based Principles of Accounting Courses.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Angela Golden<\/strong>, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, was chosen as president-elect of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. The organization has more than 29,500 members and represents the interests of more than 140,000 nurse practitioners in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Megan Macias,\u00a0<\/strong>student employee in the College of Education, won the 2011 NAU Student Employee of the Year award, and\u00a0<strong>David Boyer,\u00a0<\/strong>student employee at Cline Library, received the 2011 NAU Student Employee of the Year Runner-Up award sponsored by the Office of Financial Aid. Student employee supervisors nominate outstanding student employees based on the student\u2019s work habits, communication skills, professionalism, initiative and contribution to the NAU community. This year 33 student employees were nominated. The two winning students receive their awards during surprise presentations while the students are working. \u00a0Dean of Students\u00a0<strong>Rick Brandel<\/strong>\u00a0presided over the presentations while members of the selection committee, Office of Student Financial Aid, the student\u2019s supervisor, department members, and co-workers showered the winners with balloons and streamers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-may-6-2011\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
