Davidson Handbell Composition Competition.\u00a0<em>Black Belling<\/em>, Chapman&#8217;s winning composition for five-octave handbells, is based on African drumming techniques and African rhythms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ricardo Guthrie<\/strong>, assistant professor of ethnic studies, presented his paper, \u201cBlack Freedom Visions of the African Diaspora: Afro-diasporic Emancipation in the San Francisco Sun-Reporter,\u201d at UC San Diego\u2019s Symposium on Africa and the African Diaspora. The paper assessed how a leading Black newspaper addressed questions of race and nation during the 1950s-60s freedom struggles in the United States and Africa.
