{"id":10667,"date":"2008-10-22T11:05:32","date_gmt":"2008-10-22T18:05:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=10667"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:27:37","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:27:37","slug":"nau-to-outsource-student-e-mail-campus-input-sought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-to-outsource-student-e-mail-campus-input-sought\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU to outsource student e-mail; campus input sought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"emailBIG\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/emailBIG.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Northern Arizona University will outsource its student e-mail system and has been soliciting feedback on which platform to adopt.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,300 students\u2014including about 200 at statewide sites\u2014already are involved in a Blackboard Vista \u201ccourse,\u201d evaluating Microsoft&#8217;s Life@edu, Google and Yahoo in an effort to replace the Dana e-mail system.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from the Provost&#8217;s Academic Advisory Council and the Steering Committee for Academic Computing have been encouraged to participate in the voting and discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur current student e-mail system, Dana, is extremely cost effective. However, it has reached its capacity limit and offers only a fraction of what the outsourced solutions will give us,\u201d said John Campbell, director of Information Technology Services. \u201cAn upgrade to Dana would have been required this year. Going with one of these three services will be a better use of scarce resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although overall services are considered \u201cfree,\u201d NAU will maintain the interfaces to the new services, manage acceptable use policy issues, research faculty\/student e-mail logs, provide help-desk support and maintain records and e-mail authentication services for students and alumni.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, we can freeze our current expenses and provide many more services to a larger base,\u201d Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who wants to participate in selecting the vendor may sign up\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nau.edu\/studentemail\/\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>, which will allow participants to join a mailing list, where they will get information about vendor presentations along with how to vote.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a schedule of upcoming presentations.
