The award is given to a senior ecologist in recognition of an outstanding body of ecological work or sustained ecological contributions of extraordinary merit.The society notes that Whitham&#8217;s explanation of how genetic variation can manifest at higher levels of ecological organization &#8220;is a particularly exciting area of research in evolutionary ecology,&#8221; and describes him as a renowned mentor to an entire generation of ecologists.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tom Kolb<\/strong>, professor of forestry, and\u00a0<strong>Matthew Hurteau<\/strong>, forest ecologist with NAU&#8217;s School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, participated in a\u00a0<em>Science Live<\/em>\u00a0online discussion that addressed the subject, &#8220;Is Climate Change Stoking Global Wildfires?&#8221;\u00a0<em>Science Live\u00a0<\/em>is a weekly program sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. A transcript of the program is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/sciencenow\/2011\/06\/live-chat-is-global-warming-stok.html\">online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Natalie Angell<\/strong>, a graduate student in the School of Forestry, won the student poster competition at the North American Forest Ecology Workshop last week in Roanoke, VA. Her poster title was &#8220;Determinants of Pygmy Sugar Pine (<em>Pinus lambertiana<\/em>) in the Lake Tahoe Basin, USA.&#8221; Her co-authors were\u00a0<strong>Kristen Waring<\/strong>, assistant professor for the School of Forestry, and\u00a0<strong>Roy St. Laurent<\/strong>, associate professor for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Barbara Veltri<\/strong>, assistant professor of social studies and elementary education, and\u00a0<strong>Navin Singh<\/strong>, College of Education doctoral student, co-authored an article titled, &#8220;A Tale of Two Countries: Global Education Reform for the &#8216;Public Good?'&#8221; that was published in May in an the international journal\u00a0<em>SUTRA &#8211; the thread<\/em>, a quarterly journal for research on education, psychology, traditional sciences and systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mary I.
