{"id":10435,"date":"2008-10-01T11:39:33","date_gmt":"2008-10-01T18:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=10435"},"modified":"2014-01-21T14:36:30","modified_gmt":"2014-01-21T21:36:30","slug":"statutes-policies-detail-limits-of-political-activity-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/statutes-policies-detail-limits-of-political-activity-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Statutes, policies detail limits of political activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s only 34 days until the election, and NAU employees should make themselves aware of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.azag.gov\/SchoolGuidelines\/GuidelinesUseOfUniversityResourcesReElections.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona attorney general&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0opinion as well as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2008\/4_23_08\/policy_manual.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">university<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abor.asu.edu\/1_the_regents\/policymanual\/chap6\/6-905.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona Board of Regents policies<\/a>\u00a0that prohibit the use of university resources and limit this type of activity for NAU faculty and staff in their employment capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in the policies or statutes is intended to discourage employees in their private capacity from becoming engaged in the political process.<\/p>\n<p>Employees are prohibited from stating or implying that they are speaking on behalf of the university on a political or electoral issue. Additionally, statutes prohibit using university property, equipment, supplies or other resources\u2014including phones, mail service, photocopiers, e-mail, stationery or other items paid for by the university\u2014for political or electoral advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>The statutes generally do not apply to students, and employees are free to participate on their own time in any lawful political activities provided they do not purport to speak or act in the name of the university.
