Nationally, there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424127887324442304578231922159602676.html?KEYWORDS=college+cost\">plenty of public discussion<\/a> about the need to slow growth in the costs of college.<\/p>\n<p>Now there\u2019s recognition that the basic element of demand for higher education\u2013numbers of potential students\u2013may cease growing. In Arizona, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiche.edu\/info\/knocking-8th\/profiles\/az.pdf\">we can\u2019t count on demographics<\/a> furnishing us with increased student numbers. It seems we have already peaked in high school graduate numbers for the coming decade or so.<\/p>\n<table width=\"250\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table width=\"100%\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"color: #61003d;\"><strong>Let&#8217;s talk:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Next week I\u2019ll be at the south campus Starbucks (at the Suites) at 4 p.m., Friday Jan. 25, hoping to visit with a few of you. See you there.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Institutions in other states, where high school graduates are already decreasing, are competing for \u201cour\u201d students. And the rapid advance of technology, which provides less-expensive options, is producing <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/01\/15\/how-californias-new-online-education-pilot-will-end-college-as-we-know-it\/\">a grim assessment<\/a> of the competition faced by traditional higher education.<\/p>\n<p>For me this reinforces the importance of appealing to non-traditional student audiences, such as those we expect to pursue our new Personalized Learning degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, it\u2019s crucial to keep a careful eye on the value and quality of our \u201cbrand\u201d\u2013the degrees and student experience that differentiate NAU from the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it\u2019s clear we cannot always count on increased or growing revenues. It\u2019s a tremendous challenge to move to stability rather than incessant economic growth, even to those of us focused on sustainability.
