Volunteer with NAURA
Would you like to get more involved with NAURA? It’s a wonderful way to stay in touch with your fellow retirees and to give back to your retiree organization. We have several officer positions, elected and appointed, needing leaders and participants right now. All of these positions have voting privileges on the executive board. Please take a moment to check them out to see which one fits your desires to volunteer with NAURA. ELECTED POSITIONS
These positions are voted upon by the membership:
President (Elect, Current, Past)
2024-2025 officers
- Current President: Carole Mandino
- President Elect: Claire Schonaerts
- Past President: Kathi Zahl
All three of these positions bring strong leadership skills to the organization. The “president” position has a three-year commitment; president elect year one, president year two and past president year three.
Secretary
Gae Rue Johnson 2017-2025
This position takes minutes at the executive board meetings, transcribes and sends them to the other board members. In addition, the Secretary also maintains and updates several documents as needed, keeping all NAURA information current.
Treasurer
Greg Larkin 2019-2025
This position responsible for maintaining the organization budget, monthly reports to the executive board, audits and annual report. The Treasurer receives all payments to NAURA, makes deposits, writes checks as needed, and oversees the management of NAURA’s investments and online payment services.
APPOINTED POSITIONS

Activities Chair
Wally Rande 2024-2025
This person coordinates and implements all events and activities for NAURA. They are organized and able to connect with, and supervise, other volunteers to establish luncheons, WEB events, tours, etc., as are approved by the executive board. The activities chair reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
Archivist/Historian
Harlan Johnson 2017-2025
This person keeps the history of NAURA up to date, tracks the activities of the organization. The archivist/historian reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
ADOA/ASRS Liaison
John Hagood 2023-2025
This person stays informed with the Arizona Department of Administration and the Arizona State Retirement System through meetings, to gather information that will affect retirees. This liaison then reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of the information.
Athletics Department Liaison
Molly Munger 2024-2025
This person communicates with the athletics department on events, timelines, and the benefits to our retirees. The athletics liaison reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
FLASH Newsletter Editor
Nydia Nittman 2023-2025
FLASH is NAURA’s main form of communication with our membership. The editor(s) creates the FLASH several times a year, in a timely fashion, with articles and news, and reports to the executive board.
Highway Clean Up (Adopt-a-Highway Project) Chair
Richard Coast 2022-2025
NAURA has a section of highway that we clean several times a year. This person organizes and supervises other volunteers to accomplish this task through a maintained list of volunteers. The highway clean up chair reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
Legislative Liaison
VACANT
This person works closely with the ASU legislative liaison doing research and keeping NAURA members informed on bills that may affect them or their retirement. The legislative liaison reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
Member(s)-at-Large
VACANT
These positions designed to bring new leadership into the organization. A member-at-large will sit on the executive board and learn how the board, and the organization, functions. These people help assist others on the board as needed and have voting privileges. A member-at-large reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
Membership Records
John Nauman 2022-2025
This person (or persons) maintaining accurate records of our membership is crucial. This person keeps the spreadsheet updated with current information on paid and past members. This information is used to update our NAU listserv, send condolence cards when needed, notify relevant NAU departments of our current members, tracking the volunteer status of members, etc. The membership chair reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
NAU Benefits Liaison
Betsy Kerr 2020-2025
This person keeps our membership up to date on the NAU Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of AZ PPO Health Plan. The NAU Benefits Liaison represents NAURA on the NAU Benefits Committee. Each year, the NAU Benefits Committee reviews the current NAU BCBS of AZ health plans available to active and retired faculty, staff and their family members. This person reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
Scholarship Chair
Nydia Nittman 2023-2025
This person communicates with the NAU Foundation and the scholarship awards team to get our scholarship awardees for the year. Contact is made with the recipients for their picture and thank you letter which is posted on the NAURA website. This information is also reported to the executive committee as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information. The scholarship chair reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
Web Master
Leslie Mathews 2022-2025
This person maintains our website which is extremely important for our retirees. It contains activity and event information, NAURA, NAU and various government links, scholarship information, the FLASH (current and past) and pictures. This person must have some computer skills such as WordPress and be able to communicate and work with NAU’s ITS department. The WEB master reports to the executive board as well as the FLASH editor for publication of pertinent information.
