{"id":3313,"date":"2019-01-09T23:36:38","date_gmt":"2019-01-09T23:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/mechanical-engineering-new\/?page_id=3313"},"modified":"2024-11-07T09:24:48","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T16:24:48","slug":"bioengineering-devices-laboratory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/mechanical-engineering\/bioengineering-devices-laboratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Bioengineering Devices Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Bioengineering Devices Lab (BDL)<\/h1>\n<h2>An NAU Mechanical Engineering Lab<\/h2>\n<p>The Bioengineering Devices Lab (BDL) is affiliated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/phd-bioengineering\/program-information-page\/\">Bioengineering program<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/mechanical-engineering\/\">Mechanical Engineering Department<\/a> (ME) at Northern Arizona University.<\/p>\n<p>The BDL provides opportunities to Ph.D., Masters, and undergraduate students interested in neurovascular devices such as new microcatheter designs, ischemic stroke systems, and innovative embolic agents for aneurysms (improving on coils, flow diverters, liquid embolics, etc). The lab conducts extensive in vitro cerebrovascular flow model development and simulates patient anatomies with innovative 3D-printed tissue-like biomaterials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5397 \" src=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/mechanical-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/301\/6492_bioengineering_lab_20180808-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Becker and students in BDL lab\" width=\"616\" height=\"492\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lab is affiliated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrowneuro.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barrow Neurological Institute<\/a> (BNI &#8211; Phoenix, AZ) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nahealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Arizona Healthcare<\/a> to collaborate on translational medical device research. Undergraduate and graduate researchers from the BDL actively collaborate with small start-ups and large-industry leaders in medical device development, published in internationally renowned journals, and attend annual conferences to present their work. Conferences regularly attended include <a href=\"http:\/\/bmes.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BMES &#8211; Biomedical Engineering Society<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/surfaces.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Surfaces &#8211; Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/snisonline.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SNIS &#8211; Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"eplus-image-tiles-row not-in-view\">\n<a
