{"id":9576,"date":"2023-05-08T08:44:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-08T15:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nau.edu\/library\/?p=9576"},"modified":"2023-05-08T08:44:14","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T15:44:14","slug":"nau-selected-for-aascu-institute-on-open-educational-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/library-cline\/nau-selected-for-aascu-institute-on-open-educational-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU Selected for AASC&#038;U Institute on Open Educational Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The American Association of Colleges and Universities (AASC&amp;U) has selected an NAU team to participate in the 2023-2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/event\/2023-2024-institute-open-educational-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Institute on Open Educational Resources<\/a>, a year-long <strong>online engagement<\/strong> opportunity for institutions aspiring to launch, expand, or hasten campus adoption of free and affordable instructional materials.\u00a0 The team members are:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>Theresa Carlson<\/b>, Head of Collections and Discovery Services, Cline Library<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>Cynthia Childrey<\/b>, Dean and University Librarian, Cline Library<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>John Doherty<\/b>, Head of Research and Instruction, Cline Library<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>Dana Ernst<\/b>, Associate Professor, Mathematics and Statistics<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>John Georgas<\/b>, Senior Vice Provost, Office of the Provost<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>Michael Rulon<\/b>, Associate Teaching Professor, Global Languages and Culture<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>Amy Rushall<\/b>, Assistant Vice Provost, Teaching and Learning Center<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_xmsonormal\"><b>Amelia Shehi<\/b>, Senator, Associated Students of NAU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">According to AAC&amp;U, the Institute will help participating teams design and implement a strategy to accelerate campus OER plans for large-scale engagement and adoption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">NAU\u2019s participation will be funded via an Elevating Excellence project co-led by John Doherty and Theresa Carlson, who were awarded $106,000 to establish the use of Open Education Resources and other affordable learning resources at NAU.\u00a0 Other activities for the project include purchasing e-textbooks, creating and awarding OER development grants for faculty, a variety of training and informational opportunities, and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">Doherty, the lead for NAU\u2019s Institute team, was attracted to the Institute by its potential to aid NAU in hastening adoption of OER and other affordable learning materials solutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">\u201cWe are looking to advance our affordable learning materials initiatives, and to develop a university-wide action plan that incorporates all divisions and academic units,\u201d Doherty said. \u201cThe Institute\u2019s focus on evidence-based theory and practice aligns with the values and goals of NAU\u2019s current affordable learning materials efforts. It will allow us to more effectively develop a transformative action plan that would embed OER, low-cost learning materials, and other affordable learning materials into our curriculum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_xmsonormal\">Dean and University Librarian Cynthia Childrey knows the importance of increasing access to course materials without increasing costs to students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cWe continue to hear from students that textbook and other course material costs are a big concern for them \u2013 and also a major source of stress,\u201d Childrey said.\u00a0 \u201cWe want to find ways to reduce the burden and the stress.
