Canyon de Chelly Stewardship Agreement
Signed in the summer of 2018, the cooperative stewardship agreement for Canyon de Chelly National Monument lays out legal roles and responsibilities for canyon management for the partnering entities– the Navajo Nation, the National Park Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Sasha Stortz and Colleen Cooley of Landscape Conservation Initiative, along with support from School of Earth and Sustainability faculty member Erik Nielsen and student Ryan Tsingine, facilitated the formation of this agreement by coordinating public meetings, meetings between agencies and stakeholder groups, and conducting legal research.
