It is helpful to start tax filing with all forms and documents needed to complete the process.<\/p>\n

1042-S<\/a>: The 1042-S form will be given to nonresident alien students who have received benefits of a tax treaty for employment, scholarship, or fellowship income. You will not receive a copy of the 1042-S form if you only have a tuition waiver on your account and do not receive any checks.<\/li>\n
Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement<\/a>: W-2 forms are sent either electronically or mailed to current and former employees. This form shows how much you earned last year and how much was taken out for taxes. You will only receive this form if you have been employed in the US.<\/li>\n
Form 1099<\/a> (if applicable): The 1099 form documents miscellaneous income. For example, if you had CPT authorization to work as an independent contractor, rather than as an employee of an organization, you might receive Form 1099 instead of Form W-2 to document your earnings.<\/li>\n
Social Security number or Individual Tax Identification Number (generally not required if you will file only Form 8843).<\/li>\n
US entry and exit dates for current and past visits to the US.<\/li>\n
Address information (current US address and foreign address)<\/li>\n
Passport<\/li>\n
I-20 (F-1 status)<\/li>\n
DS-2019 (J-1 or J-2 status)<\/li>\n
Academic institution or host sponsor information (name, address, phone)<\/li>\n
Scholarship\/fellowship grant letter (if any)<\/li>\n

To help international students and scholars meet their tax obligations, Northern Arizona University provides access to Sprintax Tax Filing Software for Non-Residents<\/a>. NAU pays for software licenses that allow our non-resident students and scholars in F-1 and J-1 status to prepare federal taxes through Sprintax. Sprintax will determine your tax filing obligations and produce the appropriate forms to be either mailed to the IRS or e-filed (if eligible). At the beginning of every calendar year, information will be sent to international students and scholars on how to access Sprintax from anywhere in the world to file their taxes.<\/p>\n

Arizona state taxes<\/h3>\n
Other than federal tax, you are also subject to Arizona income tax on all income from Arizona sources. If you are in this state for a temporary or transitory purpose or did not live in Arizona but received income from sources within Arizona, you are subject to Arizona tax as well. The deadline to file taxes this year is April 15, 2026.<\/p>\n
