INE Application Process<\/h1>\n
Welcome! We would be honored to have you join us. Participating in an INE professional development program is a meaningful way to build capacity for culturally responsive schooling and strengthen support for the students you serve.<\/p>\n
INE programs are rigorous and require a significant commitment of time and effort. Before applying, we encourage you to carefully review the eligibility criteria and participant expectations for your program of interest, which are outlined on each program\u2019s homepage. Due to the scope of the work, first-year teachers are generally not an ideal fit for INE programs.<\/p>\n
In general, participants are expected to:<\/p>\n
\n
Attend all required virtual and in-person meetings (2026 program schedules are available on each program\u2019s homepage)<\/li>\n
Submit all writing assignments on time, including a final, complete curriculum unit that meets program specifications<\/li>\n
Maintain consistent communication with program staff via email and\/or phone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Application Process<\/em><\/h4>\n
Step 1: Get your principal’s support<\/em><\/h5>\n
You will need to confirm that your principal supports your application. Please discuss this with your principal before you apply. You can strengthen your application by submitting a letter of support from your principal.<\/p>\n
Step 2: Confirm your eligibility <\/em><\/h5>\n
Please carefully read the “Eligibility criteria” and “Expectations of accepted applicants” sections to confirm your eligibility. This includes ensuring that you can attend ALL in-person and virtual meetings.<\/p>\n
Eligibility criteria<\/em><\/h6>\n\n
Seeking support from your school principal to participate in the INE only ensures your successful completion of the program. Please provide them with a copy of the program description and schedule to ensure they understand the level of commitment asked of you to participate.<\/li>\n
Employed as a K-12 teacher full-time in a school serving Apache students<\/li>\n
Employed in a publicly-funded or tribally-funded school in Arizona<\/li>\n
Completed at least one full year of teaching<\/li>\n
Ability to attend ALL meetings in-person and online meetings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Time Commitment <\/b><\/em><\/h6>\n
Professional development hours are earned by completing the following activities:<\/p>\n
\n
Attending and participating in each of the online seminar meetings<\/li>\n
Attending and participating in the scheduled INE summer residency on NAU Flagstaff Campus<\/li>\n
(3) 1-day Saturday seminar meetings (1 at NAU’s Flagstaff campus, 2 on Tribal Homelands)<\/li>\n
Attend the American Indian\/Indigenous Teacher Education Conference<\/li>\n
Attend 1-day in-person Showcase in November at NAU’s Flagstaff campus<\/li>\n
Scheduled time for reading\/writing each week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Step 3:<\/i><\/b> Submit your application<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n
The application is completed via Google forms, which requires you to complete and submit the entire application at one time. Please be sure you allow sufficient time to do this; we recommend approximately one hour.<\/p>\n
The application includes two questions that should be answered in 300-600 words. <\/b>The questions are:<\/p>\n
“Part of the INE’s mission is to work with teachers who are leaders in their schools or communities. How do you demonstrate leadership in your role as a teacher?”<\/p>\n

“Please explain why you are interested in your FIRST choice seminar track topic, and describe a specific way you could integrate this seminar topic into your teaching.”<\/p>\n
It may be helpful to draft your response in a Word\/Google Document (or something similar) then copy and paste your response into the application when you are ready to submit.<\/p>\n
Step 4: Notification of acceptance<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n

Eligibility Criteria<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
1)<\/b> Must have previously participated in a teacher preparation (pre-service) or professional development (in-service) program that emphasized Native American\/Indigenous contexts in the preparation and training of teachers. <\/span><\/p>\n
2)<\/b> Must be a full-time, fully certified K -12 teacher in a grant, BIE, or public school within the United States. <\/span><\/p>\n
3)<\/b> Must be willing to pair your educator experience and expertise with new content knowledge and leadership skills to develop and write a culturally sustaining and responsive impact project to implement your specific context. <\/span><\/p>\n
4) <\/b>Must have the ability to attend ALL in-person and online meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n
Program Commitment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
Accepted educators must commit to:<\/span> <\/b><\/p>\n
1) <\/b>Attend: virtual orientation and participation in NAU’s 2026 AIITEC, 10 online national community-of-practice (NCOP) sessions, 10 monthly fellow meetings, 2 in-person conferences (NIEA 2026 Educator Day & Convention and NAU’s 2027 AIITEC)<\/span><\/p>\n
2) <\/b>Complete a written impact project<\/span><\/p>\n
3) <\/b>Present on impact project during NAU’s 2027 AIITEC at conclusion of fellowship.<\/span><\/p>\n
Step 3:<\/i><\/b> Submit your application<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n

To be eligible to participate in Let’s Talk Code, you must:<\/h5>\n
\n
Be a full-time, fully certified K–12 teacher in a grant, BIE, or public school in the Four Corners region.<\/li>\n
Teach a subject area where computer science concepts can be integrated (e.g., math, science, art, technology, language arts).<\/li>\n
Be willing to learn new content and develop a culturally sustaining and responsive curriculum unit.<\/li>\n
Be willing to embed local culture and\/or language within the curriculum unit.<\/li>\n
Be able to attend ALL in-person and online meetings associated with the program.<\/li>\n
Inform your school principal or administrator that you are applying, and provide them the seminar description so they understand the commitment required.<\/li>\n
If you teach within Diné Nation schools, “Diné” refers to the Diné Education Department; please ensure administrative communication follows district\/tribal policy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Step 3:<\/i><\/b> Submit your application<\/i><\/b><\/h5>\n
The application is completed via Google forms, which requires you to complete and submit the entire application at one time. Please be sure you allow sufficient time to do this; we recommend approximately one hour. <\/span><\/p>\n
You will be asked to explain why you are interested in joining the Let’s Talk Code research project and describe a specific way you could integrate this into your teaching. (Your answer should be 300-600 words.) Additionally, you will be asked how you demonstrated leadership in your role as a teacher (300-600 words).<\/p>\n
It may be helpful to draft your response in a Word\/Google Document (or something similar) then copy and paste your response into the application when you are ready to submit. <\/span><\/p>\n

Full-time teacher of 3-4 year olds<\/li>\n
Employed by a Head Start or other preschool serving Indigenous children<\/li>\n
Pair your educator experience and expertise with new content knowledge to develop and write a culturally sustaining and responsive curriculum unit to implement in the classroom<\/li>\n
Ability to attend ALL in-person and online meetings (See 2026 IECE Program Calendar here)<\/li>\n
Garner support from your school administrator\/principal to participate in the IECE program. Please provide your administrator\/principal with a copy of the seminar description and schedule to ensure they understand the level of commitment asked of you to participate.<\/li>\n
Educators must also commit to remaining in the classroom in their current district or school on the Native Nation for at least three years. Due to the workload, first-year teachers are not typically encouraged to apply for the IECE.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Time Commitment <\/em><\/h6>\n
You will earn 38.5 Seat Hours for Professional Development through the following activities:<\/p>\n
