{"id":2501,"date":"2023-05-07T20:27:49","date_gmt":"2023-05-07T20:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/ine\/?page_id=2501"},"modified":"2024-01-08T22:00:02","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T22:00:02","slug":"tiic","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/institute-native-serving-educators\/tiic\/","title":{"rendered":"TIIC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Teaching in Indigenous Communities (TIIC) Certificate<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Do you want to teach or work with youth and families in Indigenous communities? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>If you answered yes, <\/strong><strong>then this undergraduate certificate is for YOU!<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The TIIC was developed by faculty in the College of education, Applied Indigenous Studies, and the Institute for Native-serving Educators to provide a culturally responsive set of courses that will better prepare students who want to work in Native-serving schools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are interested developing understandings around reciprocity, cultural responsiveness, and building meaningful relationships with and in Native communities, the Teaching in Indigenous Communities (TIIC) certificate is for you! This program is open to all undergraduate students, regardless of your degree plan. The TIIC certificate requires 18 credit hours of specialized coursework. Most of this coursework is already required of students in the Elementary Education, Special Elementary Education, and Special Early Childhood Education programs, making the TIIC certificate a nearly seamless addition to these programs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4>Students completing the Teaching in Indigenous Communities (TIIC) certificate will:<\/h4>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the history of American Indian education in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>Know and be able to apply core concepts of Indigenous education including the importance of reciprocity and community.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize the unique assets of Indigenous schools and consider how to center those assets in teaching and learning approaches.<\/li>\n<li>Students will complete an experience-based, one-credit course alongside their required courses which will have a specially designed TIIC section.<\/li>\n<li>The required course plus the one-credit 346 course will enhance both experience and knowledge by allowing students to apply what has been learned in the classroom to Indigenous contexts.<\/li>\n<li>Please click <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/101\/2023\/05\/TIIC-Flyer-Final.pdf\">here<\/a> to see the courses for this certification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<h4 class=\"column\">How to get started:<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"m_7181696945405933778MsoListParagraph\">Contact your Academic Advisor and tell them you are interested in enrolling in the TIIC.
