This free event is open to the public and will feature short films from around the world. The lineup includes both documentary and narrative films that feature a diverse group of people with disabilities, including:

a documentary about a deaf skateboarder who learns to embrace his deafness;

a comedy short about a disabled man’s fight with a mosquito;

a powerful narrative film about an adult with an intellectual disability who loses her mom;

a film about sensual love between a disabled woman and her partner; and

a mockumentary showing how one’s environment and relationships affect the course of one’s life.

The festival will also feature the world premiere of two films produced by IHD and made by John Schaffer. One is a sequel of sorts to My Dad Matthew (an award-winning short film about IHD instructor Matthew Wangeman), but this time the story is told from the caregiver’s perspective and highlights the idea of interdependency. Few realize how difficult caregiving can be for both the caregiver and the person they are caring for. Matthew and his staff have graciously given us a window into that very personal side of their lives.

The other film is about Chris Lanterman, a recently retired blind NAU professor who often collaborated with IHD. In the film, Chris shares many of his thoughts on disability identity. The film also highlights how we can use audio description embedded in the story of the film to create a more seamless version of accessibility.

Following the screenings, Chris, Matthew, John, and other filmmakers will participate in a panel discussion and take questions from the audience. Note: some films have mature content and may not be suitable for some children.

The film festival will take place at the Cline Library Assembly Hall on October 5, 2024 from 6-8:30pm. We hope you can join us.

IHD will be hosting its 3rd annual Not-Inspiration Pørn Disability Film Festival on Saturday, October 5.
