Optional field trips have been organized that highlight the region&#8217;s culture, peoples, and history. Participants and their guests are invited to register for the field trips listed below, which will be filled on a first-come, first served basis. Fee-based field trips are not included in your registration and are available for an additional cost.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Flagstaff walking tour <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 1882, the arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in Flagstaff helped to launch the development of what today is the historic downtown area. Experience the city\u2019s history through its buildings and learn about the characters that populated the city\u2019s past during a one-hour walking tour of downtown Flagstaff with an experienced guide from the Pioneer Museum. Cost: Free<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Grand Canyon railway trip<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Enjoy an unforgettable ride on the <a title=\"Grand Canyon Railway\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thetrain.com\/\">Grand Canyon Railway<\/a> from Williams, Arizona, to Grand Canyon National Park. You will ride the rails in lovingly restored train cars and hear folklore and tales. Characters and musicians in period costumes will bring the Old West to life before your eyes. The trip to and from the park by train is a little more than 2 hours each way; this full-day adventure include a 3-hour stay at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, where you can enjoy the views and lunch on your own. Price includes coach-class train trip, taxes, gratuity, park entrance fee, and transportation to and from Williams, Arizona. Cost: $100\/person<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Meteor Crater and Hopi Second Mesa tour<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, is a bowl-shaped depression produced by a large meteorite in the rolling plain of the Canyon Diablo region, and it is the first stop on this field trip. Meteor Crater is the site that scientists first definitively proved an extraterrestrial impact on the Earth&#8217;s surface. Guests will take a personalized tour of the crater, which is about 3,900 ft (1,200 m) in diameter and some 570 ft (170 m) deep, and enjoy a box lunch near the crater. Following lunch, guests will travel to the Hopi Second Mesa and begin touring with a Hopi anthropologist\/archaeologist who will offer a unique perspective on Hopi relationships to the ancestral places and traditions of the Hisat\u2019sinom, the ancient ancestors.
