The most common types of leaves of absence are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Family Medical Leave<\/li>\n<li>Extended Leave for medical or personal reasons<\/li>\n<li>Industrial Leave<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leaves of absence may be taken in several different ways<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continuous leave is taken over uninterrupted period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Reduced schedule leave reduces an employee\u2019s usual number of working hours per workweek, or hours per workday.<\/li>\n<li>Intermittent leave is taken in separate blocks of time for a single illness or injury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>Supervisors Role in Managing Leaves of Absence<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>Supervisors play an important role in managing leaves of absence.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><em><strong>Before an employee is on an approved leave of absence supervisors should&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>be familiar with the different types of \u00a0leaves of absences offered by NAU.<\/li>\n<li>contact Human Resources with any questions regarding leaves of absence.<\/li>\n<li>refer employees who express a need for a leave of absence to Human Resources or the benefits web page<\/li>\n<li>monitor when the employee is at work and not at work.<\/li>\n<li>submit an online <a title=\"leave request form\" href=\"https:\/\/onbase.nau.edu\/appnet\/UnityForm.aspx?d1=AeLbvXx0MY8r4fQS89rF6YHV70B5dJGIih4z4o3Kzs80S20y%2Fj2fu8TIEYoT%2BaQjp1rlAoACU87vpWWKFk%2FpMAw94ojidfdRKHfsCYkHsyFr0JPkj3ATx0eV6Ah1EVHn%2Bu6MiMoNIeW%2BFWKCaZRI999Sx1wb395s6rIUyZwqNITmtyNZUp3WUse%2Fv5nKzxjQS%2B0c8ynoqro7v8oiSAzQyc1OA%2FoLJ6AfZqDWvZlYOvQ3BYKIFBYnP3PugdU5dgSnkHbzE0QKOhYjiqrZXw%2FKVx4%3D\">leave request form<\/a> for employees who should be notified of their right to request a leave of absence. This would include employees who have been out in excess of 3 days or who continually take intermittent time away from work for their own or a family member\u2019s medical condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong><em>While an employee is on an approved leave of absence supervisors should\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>communicate with the employee &amp; Human Resources about the employee\u2019s dates &amp; times the employee will be away from work &amp; when they will return to work.<\/li>\n<li>monitor when the employee is at work and when the employee is not at work<\/li>\n<li>assure an eROA is submitted and approved for any pay period in which an employee has time away from work.<\/li>\n<li>If an employee does not submit an eROAs the supervisor should complete an eROA for the employee so they are not overpaid.<\/li>\n<li>notify Human Resources on the date the employee begins their leave and on the date the employee returns from leave.<\/li>\n<li>ensure a return to work note is received prior to the employee working if the leave was for the employee\u2019s illness.<\/li>\n<li>continue to manage the employee\u2019s performance.<\/li>\n<li>process requests for Compassionate Transfer of Leave and Light Duty<\/li>\n<li>approve or deny personal leave requests.
