As an Honors student, we want you to create an Honors-quality study abroad experience.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that is doing research in a lab in Germany, interning with an international organization in Africa, performing in a theatre group in Australia, or publishing the results of your honors experience in an international journal. Be a global Honors student.<\/p>\n<p>Please take time to read through the questions and guidelines below, prior to applying for a study abroad program and meeting with an adviser.<\/p>\n<h2>Steps to earning Honors credit abroad<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Explore your study abroad options at the Center for International Education&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/education-abroad\/\">Ed Abroad page<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/cie\/\">.<\/a> Other options can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/honors-college\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/297\/Honors-Abroad-Flyer-2024-2025.pdf\">this flier<\/a>, too, such as Global Brigades.<\/li>\n<li>Are you an Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP) student? Learn about your Honors and IGP curricular connections\/requirements <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/honors-college\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/297\/IGP-and-Honors-Handout2022-1.pdf\">with this handout<\/a> and work with your <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/igp\/our-team\/\">Region Lead<\/a> to discuss options.<\/li>\n<li>Answer some preliminary questions (found below) that will help you prepare for studying abroad. Also, review this <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/honors-college\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/297\/Honors-Study-Abroad-2020.pdf\">Honors Study Abroad Informational sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Make an appointment with an\u00a0Honors staff member\u2014be sure to answer the preliminary questions\u00a0prior to your appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Bring paperwork you\u2019ve completed for your <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.nau.edu\/education-abroad\/\">Ed Abroad program<\/a>\u00a0to your appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Complete an <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/honors-college\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/297\/HON-SA-Proposal_2023-OL_fillable.pdf\">Honors International Education Proposal<\/a> . To access the electronic signature on this Proposal form, you must download, and not just open, this proposal form.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to discuss the number of Honors credits you could earn (from 1 to 6 units), as well as the writing expectations required by the program while you\u2019re abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Questions to consider<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>What country do you want to go to for your study abroad experience?<\/li>\n<li>What specific program have you decided upon? Describe the nature of your proposed study abroad experience (i.e., classes that you\u2019ll be taking, the timeline for your stay, and what extra-curricular activities you might participate in).<\/li>\n<li>What do you intend to glean, accomplish, and\/or get out of your international education experience? Describe your reasons for going, your goals, and your motivations for studying abroad.<\/li>\n<li>If you are taking classes at a host institution, which of these courses do you think would constitute an \u201chonors\u201d experience, and why? Courses that convey an \u201chonors\u201d experience should ideally allow you to explore a topic in depth and breadth; such courses might also be taught in a foreign language and involve some significant cultural exploration relevant to the host country itself.<\/li>\n<li>Describe the specific non-curricular activities\u00a0 and\/or independently-arranged work that you plan to engage in while you are in the host country, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>internships<\/li>\n<li>service learning<\/li>\n<li>volunteer work<\/li>\n<li>field trips<\/li>\n<li>traveling<\/li>\n<li>interviewing<\/li>\n<li>independent research<\/li>\n<li>independent study<\/li>\n<li>guided reading<\/li>\n<li>thesis work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Will you be working with a faculty member at Northern Arizona University? If so, whom? What kind of contact will you be maintaining with this individual while you are at the host institution? Will this individual be abroad with you, or will this person remain at the university?
