He first started the NAU Arboretum near the San Francisco Peaks and collected plants from around the world. Norm Grim, a biologist at NAU. This arboretum reflects the study of altitudinal vegetation zones, a concept pioneered in Northern Arizona in 1889 by C. Hart Merriam, who observed &ldquo;Life Zones&rdquo; from the lower elevations of the Grand Canyon to the top of the San Francisco Peaks.
