The campus strives to operate in a way that conserves resources or uses them as efficiently as possible.

Objective 1: Construct, operate, and maintain buildings sustainably

Top Accomplishments

  • Since 2007, all new buildings must be LEED Silver certified
  • NAU handles chemicals in compliance with Environmental Health and Safety regulations
  • The campus uses xeriscaping and drought resistant landscaping
  • Custodial Services use Green Seal Certified cleaning products, recycled trash bags, and recycled toilet paper and paper towels
  • A chemical tracking/purchasing program is regulated by the Office of Regulatory Compliance and targets departments with heavy chemical use
  • NAU is home to ten LEED certified buildings, including the Applied Research and Development building which is LEED Platinum
  • We have upgraded more than 12,000 light fixtures to more efficient fluorescent, CFL, and LED lighting as part of a 2014 university-wide facility upgrades
  • Established paperless processes for resident records and communications, marketing, room applications and assignments, and room inventories
  • All student housing is retrofitted with low flow shower heads, toilets, and urinals
