Environmental Caucus Action Teams

Making a difference at NAU

Our Action Teams share our mission, promote sustainable solutions, and work to reduce waste and climate impact at NAU. Each Action Team has a distinct purpose with a common goal: to increase sustainability awareness and implement eco-friendly solutions.

Action Teams

Communications Action Team Accordion Closed

Our mission is to engage the community by spreading awareness and understanding of sustainability-related organizations and initiatives on campus. Our work often overlaps with Green NAU, as our strategies align towards advancing a culture of sustainability. Meetings are held once per month and are open to the public. Please contact one of our co-chairs, Caitlyn Burford or Ann-Marie deWees, for more information.

Energy Action Team Accordion Closed

Committed to decreasing our climate impact, we think creatively about options for reducing our emissions. As our student population, gross square footage, and faculty and staff numbers increase, conservation and energy efficiency are key to reducing NAU’s impact. NAU has pledged to strive for climate neutrality, and over the past few years, NAU has made significant investments to reach this goal.

In our monthly meetings, we discuss future projects, creative financing strategies, and ways to develop partnerships for large-scale renewable energy development across Northern Arizona. Please contact one of our co-chairs, Karin Wadsack or Jon Heitzinger, for more information.

Sustainable Landscaping Action Team Accordion Closed

This team strives to make the NAU campus better for students, faculty, staff, and the greater Flagstaff community by eliminating the health risks associated with synthetic herbicides. Through research and actions, we hope to conserve resources and protect the environment through the use of more sustainable methods of lawn care. The Sustainable Landscaping Action Team’s newest project is the Northern Arizona Pollinator Habitat Initiative (NAZPHI) which seeks to promote the creation, protection, and registration, of pollinator habitats across Northern Arizona.

Transportation Action Team Accordion Closed

The focus for us is evaluating, supporting, promoting, and improving sustainable transportation alternatives at NAU. We meet every other Friday from 9:30 — 10:30 a.m. at the Applied Research and Development building (#56). Explore the options available to students below, including campus biking options and bus schedules. To get involved with our team, please contact Cori Cusker.

Waste Minimization Action Team Accordion Closed

This committee works to promote the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability in areas of unnecessary waste. We do this by developing infrastructure and processes to efficiently and effectively minimize all facets of waste generated on or by the NAU campus. To learn more or to get involved with our team, please contact us.
