FYLI Equitable & Inclusive Teaching Seminar
Applications are now closed.
This is an in-person seminar.
The Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Seminar (EITS) is an opportunity open to full-time faculty who teach introductory-level courses (100 and 200 level). EITS is for faculty interested in a transformative professional learning opportunity around equity and universal achievement for all students. EITS will equip faculty with tools to explore their course outcomes with an equity-minded lens, receive resources and guidance on building inclusive classroom spaces, and also offer opportunities for faculty to deeply explore their teaching, course design, and relationships with students.
Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Seminar Overview:
Seminar participants will be made of 20 faculty across disciplines working alongside four to five Student Consultants, guest speakers and facilitators associated with FYLI and the Teaching and Learning Center.
EITS is designed as a learning community wherein professionals grow alongside one another, collaborate in exploring course evolutions, and build a community of support as they grow as equity-minded practitioners. Beginning in March of 2023, the Equity Academy has four distinct phases.
Phase One: Foundations of Equity-Mindedness (March-May 2023)
Faculty begin by completing a self-paced, 10-week online course offered by the Association for College and University Educators, “Fostering a Culture of Belonging.” This course will offer faculty a foundation for equity-minded and inclusive teaching including key concepts, deployable tools, and pedagogical resources. In this phase, Seminar participants build a conceptual foundation while also building confidence as equity-minded educators.
- EITS Kick-Off Meeting Feb. 24, 3:30 – 4:30 pm
- ACUE online kick-off Feb. 28, 3:00 – 4:00 pm (will be recorded)
- March 6 ACUE course opens
Phase Two: Inquiry (May – June 2023)
In this phase, participants will engage in a dynamic learning space wherein they will explore concepts like assessment theory, inclusivity in large classes, Universal Design for Learning, and many more ideas with colleagues and experts from around campus. Participants will analyze their own class-level data, making inquiries into equity gaps (or absence of equity gaps) across multiple student identities. Faculty will be given access to institutional resources empowering them to use a data-driven approach to equity, including granular approaches like “inquiry close to practice” at the assignment level. Additionally, faculty will be supported in making inquiries into their own personal and professional identities and exploring how those identities impact their teaching.
We will gather in-person on:
- May 24 (9 am – 4 pm)
- May 25 (9 am – 4 pm)
- May 26 (9 am – 1 pm)
- May 31 (9 am – 4 pm)
- June 1 (9 am – 4 pm)
- June 2 (9 am – 1 pm)
Phase Three: Action (June-August 2023)
In this phase, faculty will meet in small groups or individually with EITS facilitators and Student Consultants. Here, faculty take an individualized approach to exploring and actualizing a handful of evidence-based course evolutions guided by classroom and/or grade book level data. Faculty can expect to meet individually or in small groups two-to-three times during this phase. Facilitators and Consultants will work around faculty’s summer commitments.
Phase Three culminates in a late summer Equity-Minded Symposium wherein faculty will share their individualized course evolutions, inclusive pedagogy strategies, or other relevant innovations in pursuit of equitable outcomes. The Symposium will be held on:
- August 17 (9 am – 12 pm)
Phase Four: Monitor and Adjust (Fall 2023)
Faculty will be awarded a modest stipend of $2,000 for their participation in EITS, in addition to resources, books, and the ACUE course. This stipend will be paid out upon successful completion of EITS.
