FERPA’s primary function continued
Even though FERPA protects students’ education records, some student information, called directory information, is available to the public.
Directory information is any publicly accessible information, including a student’s
- Name, local and permanent address, and phone number
- Email address
- Major field of study
- Dates of attendance
- Degrees, honors, and awards received
- Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
- Weight and height of members of athletic teams
- The most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student
- Enrollment status (undergraduate, graduate, freshman, part-time, full-time)
These categories are considered to be public information and are, therefore, not restricted by the law unless the student has indicated that some or all of this information may not be shared. Employees must always check first within Louie before sharing any of this information without the student’s consent.
