About the Faculty Ombudsman
I am Dr. Bruce Fox, Faculty Ombudsman for Northern Arizona University. I began in this role in the Fall 2018 and I am pleased to serve the faculty and the university in this capacity. I came to Northern Arizona University in 1985 as a faculty member in the School of Forestry and currently hold the rank of Full Professor. In addition, I have served as chair of the School of Forestry (two as interim and one as the regular chair), Director of the Honors Program for six years, and Director of the Master of Administration Program for two years. While new to the position of Faculty Ombudsman, I am familiar with the role and the work of the Ombuds Office. I completed training in mediation through the Ombuds Program Office and a recent comprehensive professional development workshop provided by the International Ombudsman Association (IOA). I am an associate member of the IOA and dedicated to providing services to the faculty based on the core principles of confidentiality, neutrality and impartiality, informality, and independence. My experience as a faculty member, administrator, and in private sector leadership positions help me bring important skills to my work in this role.
I am available for consultation to individual faculty members, academic administrators, academic professionals, and faculty groups during the academic year. The best way to arrange for a meeting is to call the Ombuds program office number, 928.523.8767. You will probably need to leave a message to have me return your call as I am only in the office on a limited basis. Be assured that the message is fully confidential and no one other than myself has access to the voicemail messages. I try to check the messages each afternoon and return calls within 24 of when they are left.
If you are unsure if the Ombuds program is the right place to seek assistance, please call and I will be happy to discuss your concern and help identify appropriate resources even if I am not able to address your needs. I believe that by working together we can create a working environment that is respectful and productive for each member of the university community.
