Campuses student service center, its statewide advising center, its programming department, and NAU TV Services in a 23,000-square-foot building.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Architect:\u00a0<strong>Burns Wald-Hopkins Shambach Architects<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Contractor:\u00a0<strong>Kinney Construction Services<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This building uses about 43 percent less energy than a typical building of the same size from the use of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>passive ventilation<\/li>\n<li>solar-preheating of outside air<\/li>\n<li>an active chilled beams heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Features<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>This new facility connects to the existing Communication building through a new atrium that will also be the main entry for the Extended Campuses program.<\/li>\n<li>The building is open to natural light, creating an airy social and collegial space.<\/li>\n<li>A reflective roofing system and light-colored paving lessen the heat island effect.<\/li>\n<li>Showers are located on the second floor.<\/li>\n<li>Light trespass is minimized from the building and from the site to meet the\u00a0<a title=\"Flagstaff Dark Sky criteria\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flagstaffdarkskies.org\/dark-sky-solutions\/dark-sky-solutions-2\/outdoor-lighting-codes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flagstaff Dark Sky criteria<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The west side of the building has a vegetative solar screen.<\/li>\n<li>Interior materials \u2013 glues, sealants, paints, carpet, and wood \u2013 do not emit toxic fumes.<\/li>\n<li>Over 90 percent of interior spaces have views to the exterior of the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Achieving LEED Gold<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Energy efficiency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The HVAC system introduces an active chilled beam heating and cooling system, which produces significant energy savings and operates more quietly than traditional systems.<\/li>\n<li>Window glazing systems provide optimum shading while allowing for effective day lighting.<\/li>\n<li>The building enclosure was developed to meet energy conservation goals.<\/li>\n<li>Occupancy sensors are installed to assist with lighting and energy conservation.<\/li>\n<li>Air filtering systems meet LEED standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Construction and reduced building impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>60 percent of wood used in the project was grown and harvested in sustainably managed forests.<\/li>\n<li>The building is an infill project located in a previously developed portion of campus.<\/li>\n<li>Recycled cotton batt (blue jeans) was used for insulation.<\/li>\n<li>91 percent of demolition debris was recycled.<\/li>\n<li>50 percent energy cost savings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Water efficiency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The building contains low-flow plumbing and lavatory fixtures.<\/li>\n<li>Reclaimed water is being utilized for landscape irrigation and non-potable lavatory needs.<\/li>\n<li>85 percent water use reduction.<\/li>\n<li>Passive water harvesting is used on the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- shortcode-right-column
