{"id":1081,"date":"2018-07-14T12:52:12","date_gmt":"2018-07-14T19:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/facility-services\/applied-research-and-development-building\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T18:37:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T18:37:09","slug":"applied-research-and-development-building","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/facility-services\/pdc\/building-green\/applied-research-and-development-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Applied Research and Development Building"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Applied Research and Development Building<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2018\/07\/ARD-470-ek.jpg\" alt=\"Applied Research and Development building.\" width=\"470\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Applied Research and Development Building (ARD) showcases the latest innovations in high-performance construction technology, energy-efficient design, and use of renewable energy.<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Gross square feet: 59,821<\/li>\n<li>Architect: <strong>Burns Wald-Hopkins Shambach Architects<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Contractor: <a title=\"Kitchell Contractors, Inc.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kitchell.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kitchell Contractors, Inc.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It earned 60 points out of a possible 69 to meet the highest rating\u2014Platinum\u2014from the U.S. Green Building Council\u2019s <a title=\"Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design\" href=\"http:\/\/new.usgbc.org\/leed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design<\/a> (LEED) system. At the time if its completion, it was the greenest building in Arizona and has the third-highest LEED point total in the world.<\/p>\n<h2>Achieving LEED Platinum<\/h2>\n<h3>Construction<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>90 percent of waste materials generated from building construction were recycled instead of sent to the landfill.<\/li>\n<li>About 30 percent of the materials used came from recycled products, including insulation made from recycled denim jeans.<\/li>\n<li>57 percent of the materials used were produced, manufactured, or harvested locally.<\/li>\n<li>Wood used in the building was harvested from a certified renewable forest in Arizona.<\/li>\n<li>The building\u2019s concrete contains 40 percent fly ash (waste from coal-fired electric plants), keeping this material out of landfills and reducing the need for cement, the manufacturing of which is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Energy efficiency<\/h3>\n<p>Energy-efficient practices reduce energy needs by 60 percent.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A 160-kilowatt photovoltaic system donated by Arizona Public Service (APS) provides up to 20 percent of the electricity for the building.<\/li>\n<li>A back-up heating system uses roof-mounted solar thermal panels.<\/li>\n<li>Unique \u201centhalpy wheels\u201d installed in the air-handling units extract heat from the exhaust air to pre-heat fresh air from the outside, capturing heat from the building that otherwise would be lost.<\/li>\n<li>Sunlight provides more than 75 percent of the lighting for occupied spaces.<\/li>\n<li>Light-harvesting technology adjusts office lighting by reading the brightness of the room.<\/li>\n<li>Automated shade controls regulate solar gain to keep building temperatures within a comfortable range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Reduced building impact<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Landscaping is designed to collect and filter pollutants.<\/li>\n<li>The living or \u201cgreen\u201d roof on the conference unit is designed to insulate the building, reduce the \u201cheat island\u201d effect typical of large roofs, and maintain a native vegetation cover that requires little or no supplemental irrigation after initial establishment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Water efficiency<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Indigenous landscaping reduces irrigation requirements by 50 percent.<\/li>\n<li>Reclaimed water replaces potable water for landscaping irrigation and flushing toilets.<\/li>\n<li>Low-pressure faucets, waterless urinals, and low-volume toilets reduce water needs by 60 percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Awards<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>2005 Holcim Award Acknowledgement Prize for Sustainable Construction, North America<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Southwest Contractor Best of 2007 \u2013 Best Public Green Building Project and Best Higher Education Project\" href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.com\/articles\/40700-higher-educationresearch-best-project---northern-arizona-university-science-and-health-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Southwest Contractor Best of 2007 \u2013 Best Public Green Building Project and Best Higher Education Project<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2007 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Arizona<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"2008 Go Beyond Award from the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories\" href=\"https:\/\/news.nau.edu\/ard-pulls-in-another-honor\/#.XSjKR-hKiUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2008 Go Beyond Award from the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2009 Gold Medal Award Winner from The Building of America<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"2009 Royal Institute of British Architects' International Award\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/northern-arizona-university-building-among-worlds-best\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2009 Royal Institute of British Architects&#8217;
