Ethics in Leadership: Topics and Experts<\/h1>\n

From an academic perspective at NAU, business ethics includes subjects from The W. A. Franke College of Business, the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, the Department of Business & Administration at NAU-Yuma, as well as the economic aspects of subjects taught in departments across campus, such as the College of Health and Human Services, the School of Music, the Department of Educational Leadership, the School of Communication, the Department of Politics and International Affairs, and many others.<\/p>\n

\n

People in leadership roles regularly deal with business ethics. Making good ethical decisions is not always easy. It can require that a person think beyond their comfort zone and look for potential ethical issues. It is key not only to understand the foundations of ethics, but also to have tools to help make decisions.<\/p>\n\n

Business and Hospitality Ethics<\/h4>\n

Northern Arizona University’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM)<\/strong> is home to the Isbell Hospitality Ethics Program. Professor Allen Reich and Chef Mark Molinaro<\/a> serve as the current Isbell Hospitality Ethics Professors.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The goal of the Isbell Professorship is to improve the ethical climate in the hospitality and tourism industry by emphasizing and highlighting awareness for hospitality students and professionals. This goal is pursued through research, teaching, and professional workshops. Research literature supports that it is imperative to teach ethics to hospitality students. With the availability of seemingly endless information on the internet, concerns arise regarding the accuracy and presentation of information. In today’s world, questions exist about the role of mass media, social network platforms, and news outlets.<\/p>\n

In our global economy, information is critical. It also is pervasive. Faculty at NAU address ethical issues from data security to privacy concerns. Faculty in our School of Informatics, Computer, and Cyber Systems (SICCS) are experts in the use of data to improve making decisions related to health care, business, computer science, engineering, natural sciences, and more. In addition, faculty across campus are engaged in scholarly activity related to data analytics in health case, accounting and business, and many other fields. The College of Education’s accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and the Council for Accreditation and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) demonstrates a commitment to developing ethical school leaders of strong character. Leadership Ethics<\/h4>\n

Northern Arizona University hosts many programs to help train leaders in ethics. In addition to discipline-specific activities which can be found on their particular topic pages, we host the following programs throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Philosophy, Politics, and Law.<\/strong>\u00a0 As part of the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics, and Law, the NAU Philosophy Department offers several ethics-focused seminars throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Philosophy in the Public Interest (PPI).<\/strong> For nearly a decade, NAU’s PPI program has partnered with local business and community leaders in Flagstaff and Sedona to host salons on a variety of ethics-related topics called the Hot Topics Cafe<\/a>.
