Lecturer Jermaine Martinez – School of Communication
Dr. Martinez’s research explores how implicit assumptions of communication shape contemporary senses of understanding and misunderstanding, as well as agreement and disagreement. This work derives from his rhetorical investigation of autobiographical accounts of mood disorders, depression in particular. By examining enduring communicative disjunctions between apparently irreconcilable experiences of reality, Dr. Martinez explores equally enduring ethical questions about what it means to be understood, feel understood, and to cultivate a willingness to listen to radically different expressions of subjective experiences.
